Sounds like you took the right measures then.
I've always encouraged people to let it sit in tank water for a little bit first. The preservatives are just acids. What keeps it in suspension are just carbon sources for your tank.
Better store it in a good way... after a year if exposed to air, it will partially convert to sodium bicarbonate and become lumpy. Then you'll have to bake it to reconvert it :(
