Torch flesh peeling back from the bottom?

I concur with the high alk being a possabliity. I've lost 3 torches and an octospawn in the last couple of months. I was having a contaminant issue (Tin) so I kept water changing every 5-7 days...and my alk went up and up and up. Slowly....but still. They were happy at 6 and dyeing back at...

    Constantly resisting the chemical tinker

OK. So ICP can be done ASAP and has no negative effects. I have reviewed each dosing tube output by hand (just a quick run-burst into a cup) and I don't see any fragments...but I'm not sure how to test that over 24 hours. Maybe skip a days dosing and run them into cups over 24 hours? -...

    Constantly resisting the chemical tinker

There are a ton of solutions to tank problems. Among them is a whole class of solutions that involve dumping some new chemical into the tank. I still consider myself very new to this at just about 2 years now. I haven't experimented with different additives to control bubble/hair algeas...

What did you get from CFM?

yep, that is the one I picked up. I saw it at the last CFM and it just stuck out. Something about seeing them with your own eyes....it really is dramatically brighter than any others I've seen. So I was waiting until this CFM to see if he still had it. Sometimes color is just environmental...

    Black algae/ sponge???

Do you dose with AB+? Over-dosing with AB+ encourages a kind of black...something...to cover the rock. Something about too many aminos in the tank maybe. The AB+ bottle specifically mentions it...maybe fatty acid precipitate? Anyway....check the AB+ bottle direction if you dose with it.

What did you get from CFM?

Replaced an Octospawn that I split off a while back with an octospawn from CoralExotic. Top back left is the new single headed fluorescent green/yellow from CoralExotic. The more typical green octospawn in front of it has 6 heads and is 5-6" across...to show size. Original arrangement The...

    Looking to switch Salt

No salt suggestions, but I read that mixing salt water first at room temp and then heat before WC is recommended. When I went with this model, I get less brown salts built up on the pump and heater. So, to be clear: 1 Add salt and wait for 5 minutes. 2 Add/turn on pump...minimum of 20...

What's your experience with high mortality corals?

No boring mussels that I know of. Also, small rock/skeleton mount, then on the sand bed. Sitting about 1" off the sand. Also mount is at a maybe 30° angle.

What's your experience with high mortality corals?

The scoly I have was in a tank for over a year, and I've had it now for over a year as well. No fish, but I feed lps pellets to acans and scoly 1-2/week.

    DBTC: Red Eye Branching Cyphastrea

I saw this at the swap this weekend. One frag from finaddict I think. It was gone in the first round before I had a chance to pick it up. I'm interested in a frag, dbtc or otherwise. I'll stop by at CFM.

Is aeration enough to manage pH?

I've got small 10 and 20g tanks. Use a lot of water movement and aerate. Lots of coral, no fish. I think my measurement is off so that's my first goal....find a better measurement stick....at least 2 significant digits.

Is aeration enough to manage pH?

No fish, just coral, inverts, bacteria and algae. Maybe I have a measurement issue then. I'm measuring pH continuously and the 7.8-8.0 is the range across all 3 tanks. Each one has a tighter range....maybe .1. But I'm seeing that .1 movement sample to sample every minute. So maybe I need to...

Is aeration enough to manage pH?

I just started measuring pH in the 3 wide nano tanks. These all have their own systems. No water mixing. pH sits between 7.8 and 8.0 in all 3 tanks. I've been dosing Kalk and alk at various levels in the tanks. From everything I've read, I should be seeing swings and I don't. At least not...

Stabilizing pH and alkalinity with calcium hydroxide and carbonate

I'm dosing for kalk and alk evenly over the day, but offset from each other. But likely swinging pH all over the place. So, I'm interested in how this plays out because I've been thinking about an offset as well. I've got certain coral that react strongly to different chemical...

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

Not sure I can be too much help here, I've had limited experience and am usually using packaged PWM motor drivers. But, here are some thoughts.... If it is not a 24V motor: A PWM will give you an average voltage by swinging from pole to pole (24V to 0V in this case). So if you want an 18V...

    algae on walls

It is pretty obvious in more shallow nano tank where the glass to volume ratio is much higher. Cleaning the glass after a vacation has a noticeable change in polyp extension for corals near the glass and in low corners. Maybe the ratio is different in deeper and larger tanks so it isn't as...
