Seriously, if you have only one .. take the entire rock out and nuke it in the sunshine for a month. Trying to nuke it with anything may just explode it into thousands. Trust me. V

    How do you manage vacation?

When I had fish :( I had a friend come over to check on them and see if the feeders were full/working. I also set up a webcam to look at the tank. Now with no fish, I just fill a 44g Brute with RO/DI water and put my top-off line into that. I've left the tank for a full month with no problems...

    DBTC: Captain Jerk

Well today, I found a snail curled up in it's shell, sitting next to the Captain Jerks! Is this coincidence or is the palytoxin of Cpt Jerks deadly to snails as well? In this photo the snail is to the right of the palys, that's the bottom of the shell with the snail foot retracted in there...

I see, so in other word, I’m going to break the chain.

    DBTC: Captain Jerk

oh no, I picked those off the dbtc table at the swap at the end of the day. If we don’t want the risk of having these, but picked them up, is there any recommendation as to what to do with them? I don’t want to murder them, but I also don’t want a known danger in my tank either.

    Crazy winds- Backup power check

What kind of generator do you have? One of those large Trane generators that run on diesel/propane? Or one of the RV style ones that are 5000 kW gas with a manual/automatic transfer switch? I bought a generator when my kids were babies so I could keep the fridge and freezer running, this was...

    Crazy winds- Backup power check

We lost power for about one second, the B-11 air pumps automatically turned on and then off. My skimmer pump did not restart. I'll need to check it out later tonight, I wonder if after 20 years, this brownout killed that Mag5 pump. V

    Need floor checked

Oh yeah, I forgot, the 4x6 beam I installed had to be shimmed on top due to the unevenness of the actual floor joists! So I bough a piece of flat steel, cut them to about the width of the beam (in theory 4") and then painted them black with rustoleum paint, I used one or two of them between the...

Thanks Ashburn2k! Custom anemone / acclimation box

Nice! I recommend putting a piece of rock in the box so the anemone can attach to it and make moving it easier! I have no idea if anemones like sitting on a "grate" pattern, but I don't know. V

    Need floor checked

I have the same sized tank, if you look up my Wifebane tank journal, I have a few pics of what I did under the house. Basically I cut two squares out of the concrete "rat proofing" in the crawlspace, then dug it out about a foot, pouring in some concrete with some rebar and then plonked a...

    3/25/2023 BAR Frag Swap

It always saddens me that GSP and Xenia are banished from the main frag event. I mean GSP is so awesome, it's colorful and it's really nice looking and it if does go crazy, it peels off easily. Xenia have so many varieties and the pulsing is amazing. HOWEVER, yeah, we don't need mountains of it...

    Kalkwasser & ph anecdote

Sorry for late replies; - I dose kalk through my ATO, I checked last month and I evaporate about 1.5 gallons a day. (Is this a lot?) - I dose though a home made mixer. It's a tall tube with a maxijet plumbed such that water at the top is blasted into the bottom of the tube for 1 minute 4 times...

    Kalkwasser & ph anecdote

How are you Alk/Calc readings? My alk/calc is pretty steady with just kalk as ATO. Though I dose a bit of alk. My CA is through the roof though.

    Power ... again

Cheap insurance is the silent air B-11 air pump. It’s battery powered and you plug it in the wall. When power cuts, they turn on and aerate your tank. A pair of d batteries can go for like 8 hours.

    DIY Automated Alkalinity Tester

That’s very cool! When it is automated and in its final form. What does it need from you to take a reading? How is the sample container emptied, etc…

Does the Ranco temperature controller probe need to be waterproofed?

I have the Ranco branded single stage unit. I heat shrank it but my tubing was only long enough to cover the probe and two inches of wire. I pinched close the end. plastic tubing with silicon might be better.

Does the Ranco temperature controller probe need to be waterproofed?

I just wired up my Ranco controller and am testing it in a bucket of water with the heater element I plan to use. I did some web searching and some folks mentioned using heat shrink tubing on the probe as the Ranco probe was not “waterproof”. Ranco users, did you heat shrink your temp probe? V

    EMERGENCY: HEATER MALFUNCTION (PLEASE HELP)

Ah, thanks. I think targeting 77 or 78 degrees should be reasonable then. Again, I think stability and the temp being "reasonable" is the target. There doesn't seem to be much consensus about what the "right" temperature is, especially with mixed reefs with corals from all different parts of the...

    EMERGENCY: HEATER MALFUNCTION (PLEASE HELP)

That's cool! I currently have the club's CO2 meter, which actually has temperature and humidity on it as well. I took the digital thermometer out of the water and put it's probe next to that device, I also have another desktop humidity/temp gadget that I use to check humidity downstairs I put...

    EMERGENCY: HEATER MALFUNCTION (PLEASE HELP)

I have just wired a ranco controller. I stuck the probe in and it said 76F. hmmmm.... but my Aquacontroller says 83! So I dug out a digital aquarium thermometer, put new batteries and use that, it said 75.9. So Hmm...... OK. I check my ancient Aquacontroller and re-calibrate it and now it tracks...
