    Carbon Dosing FW Tanks

I miss having African FW tanks and was thinking of starting a small one again. The big thing with them is the huge bioload and the resulting algae issues. Even with mechanical filtration and WCs its a never ending battle to keep them looking good. I've been having great success with carbon...

    Favia forming polyp balls

It appears my favia is quite happy. Its forming polyp balls to reproduce. Any thoughts on capturing to grow out once they release (if i can find them) or should i manually remove them? -Gregory

OK... tell the truth. How hard are acroporas really?

I am having very good success with monti's and pocilopora (sp?). They look great and are putting on what I consider fast growth from what I was expecting. So now I'm thinking that maybe I'll try an acro or two. 1) Are they really that much harder? 2) Are there some that are more forgiving...

    Are my corals eating?

OK... really stupid question. How do I know if my sps are eating? When I had softies and gorgonians it was easy to tell by watching the polyps... with sps there really is no change. My monti digi retracts a VERY small amount. But all the others never change. The food offered is a variety of...

    GDawson's New Nano

Well not exactly new.... It was originally setup in mid April 2013 and allowed to cycle with lights off until mid June when the lone yellow tail damsel was purchased. The tank continued to run sans lights for another 2 months before the first coral was introduced and the lights were turned on...

Diodogorgia nodulifera and Swiftia exserta care…..

Anyone have success with these? I would like to try in my nano, but care instructions vary. Some sites say they need to be fed several times daily for success… others say only several times per week. I can reasonably commit to twice a day……more than that is not possible. -Gregory

2 Part Compatibility Issues Between Brands

Are there any comparability issues with B-ionic and BRS two part additives? I have some B-ionic part 1 (alk) left over but will also be using BRS part 2 (Ca). Any issues or use BRS part 1 too. -Gregory

SPS Questions for a Solana 29 Nano

*****I have never kept SPS****** So I’m thinking of putting some SPS sticks in the new nano….. easy, less demanding ones like Monitpora, Pocillipora, Seriatopora, or Stylophora. All placed at the top of the rockwork as there are only T5 lights. The rest of the tank is going to be LPS...

    Bagged Live Sand

So getting ready to fire up the nano again. Yeah!! And I have a couple of questions about bagged live sand. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/fiji-pink-arag-alive-live-reef-sand.html 1) Has anyone used it? What do you think? 2) How does it look? 3) How much needed to a 24”x24”x1”...

    Cycling with LS

I’m getting ready to get back into the hobby and setup a 29 gal nano. When cycling is it ok to add the live sand at the beginning of the cycling process or wait until after? Will the ammonia and nitrite spikes take its toll on the bacteria/good flora/fawna? Or does it matter? -Gregory

Epicystis crucifer and fish. Do they get along?

I'm in the planning stages to start the nano I kept. Of coarse this is the fun part because of all different habitats that can be imagined. The flower anemones (Epicystis crucifer) are nice and a little different. They also don't seem to wonder much. Are they fish eaters? Anyone keep these...

Paly Rocks in a FW Tank

I'm going to turn the empty nano into a FW tank for now so at least I have something aquatic in the house. I'd like to use some of the old live rock for it but they were covered in palys/zoas. Right now they're drying in a bucket in the sun. Are they safe to put into a FW tank or will the...

Name this fish: Whats small, cute, full of personality. and eats macroalgae

After two years one rock has sprouted a macro that looks like dicondra (ya know..from lawns?). Very small roundish oval leaves..tight compact growth and runners that try to stretch all over the tank. It is slowly enveloping EVERYTHING. I tried emerald crabs (which coloured up beautifully with...

    What Eats Coralline?

I can’t grow coralline on my rock to save my life…..the rocks are routinely scoured like one of the road smoothers they use on the freeways to even the concrete. Any ideas? -Gregory

    Nudibranchs for Flatworms

So I’ve been battling flatworms in my wife’s nano for several months now and they continue to be out of control. I’m prolly going to have to tear the whole thing down, dip all the corals and rocks and start from scratch…..what a PITA. According to the Delbeek/Sprung book there are some...

Fragmenting Capnella – Good or Bad?

So my beautiful blue/green capnella has started to fragment and drop polyp clusters/heads all over the tank. Does that mean that it’s really happy and trying to spread or it’s really stressed and this is a survival mechanism? -Gregory

    Tissue Recession on a Gorgonian

I have a gorgonian (pacific variety I think, never been able to identify) that is starting to recede from the base upward. It’s a bright silver white with overlapping micro-scales that flare on the tips and really tiny dark brown polyps (appears to be at least partially NPS and eats RN OF). It’s...

What is it with dogs and cancer?

I’ve had dogs since I was a kid (a time lost in the mists of antiquity). And up until recently they all died of various things with only one being a hit-and-run. In the last twenty years we’ve had 5 dogs and all 5 have had cancer and were euthanized before it really affected quality of life. The...
