Frogfish Spawning Vid

That's cool Norman. Any chance of an avi or wmv version of the little movie.

I don't know jack about frogfish - How long can you keep frogfish in a 7g minibow?

You got some ugly fish there Norman :D ... Very cool video.
My wife likes frogfish and boxfish but doesn't want me to setup a another tank for them. She wants to put them in my 100g with 10 other small fish :( ..

I do have bunch of clips in wmv format... about 100 meg total, I think. I can put those onto a CD.

Frogfish don't need a big tank like other fish their size might. Scott Michaels has kept them for extended periods of time in a 5 gallon, though you have to stay on top of water quality for that small a tank.

20-30 gallons would be easily workable for the medium sized 4-5 inch frogs. I've been keeping pictus frogs in my 72, but that's way bigger than necessary.

Smaller frogs, and dwarf frogs could stay in a 10 or so. Baby frogs, especially baby ones of the more cryptic types do better in small tanks, for ease of feeding.

Giant frogs, the football sized Commersons, would be better in 60 plus, IMO.

Frogs in general do best with reef quality water on the low side of the temp range. "Tonga" temps would be good.

The ones in the vid, I believe are A. dorehensis, or New Guinea frogfish. A smaller cryptic type.... not the best for a display tank... more for frogfish geeks. Max size is 3", but supposedly most are not bigger than 2". These were 1.5" and 2".

Dudley... fish porn, hahaha. I did post on Grim Reefers using the subject, "XXX Here is teh hot sechs of Frogfish pr0n!!!11 XXX". It makes sense if you hang out on GR. Check out their off topic forum.... one of the most un-PC reef forums I've been on. It cracks me up.

Phong, hehehe... yep ugly. That's why I'm Mr. Ugly! Boxfish??!! Those get hecka big, don't they? If you put a frog in a 100 gallon tank with 10 small fish, you get a 100 gallon tank with 1 fat happy frog :)

Go ahead and put a Commersons in your 100. Your wife will fall in love with your fish. Then you say, "Oh no... this is the Giant frog... I thought it was the regular one! We have to get another tank so Nemo and Dory won't get eaten! They look really scared!" Then you get to have your second tank. Frogfish are easy to catch. You can just reach in the tank and scoop them up. Don't let them swallow air, though.

Rich, yep. Egg raft is saved. I have it in the tank in a deli container with mesh/lid. Supposedly eggs can hatch in 2-8 days.... I need to do some major quick RTFM on raising fish fry. I'll probably get Bryan/Uberfugu to help. He's been trying to breed Lophiocharon frogs. He posted an interesting diagram of a frog fry raising setup. Gotta hit up Jimsar for info on raising fry too.

Think frogfish would be a good meeting lecture topic? Would be cool if we could get Scott Michaels or Thomas Pietsche to do a talk. Any thoughts?

Phong,

I'm looking out for you, man! :)

Show this cutesie pic to your wife. She'll put 2 frogs into the 100. Then you'll eventually get to set up 2 more tanks, when you "have to" separate the frogs from each other and everybody else :)

Oh dang, they are so cute.
If I do what my wife wants, you guy will kill me.
She wanted me to put the lion fish that I gave you in her 2G tank. :D  ... She was mad when I said NO.

Best kept in a species tank. You can do a predator reef, or you could do fowlr. Either one can be bare bottom if you prefer.

My 72 is lagoonal predator reef species tank w/ dsb(yeah, I know, I know...).

The spawning pair are in a 7 gallon Minibow, but I don't recommend most people to keep their frogs in pairs, let alone in such a small tank. I'm only doing the 7 in this situation because these frogs are smaller than most, they hide underneath the rocks most of the time(unlike the more common pictus type frogs), and the small tank facilitates hand feeding.

I run the Minibow with a bare bottom, and I'm doing daily 2 gallon water exchanges with water from my 72 reef. The rocks are still shedding, so the water in the vid looks dusty.

Post if you have frogfish comments or questions. I can try to answer or point you to useful info.

Scott Michael's needs to put your video in his presentation. He was showing the courting behaviour in his presentation at WMC on Saturday.

Neat :)

I'll trade him unlimited usage of my vid for a speaking at one of the next BAR meetings. Whatcha think? :)

Actually, I've been wanting to email him about doing a meeting for us! There are some serious frogfish fans here in the Bay Area.

Be prepared to wait, he's a very busy guy. You can go to the MASNA speakers registery to see the listed speakers and what they have to say about wants/needs/time frames/etc.

Here's a link:

It worked with out me being logged in once, but I can't seem to get it to do it again. I'll have to contact my boss and get my account info again. I should have it for you tomorrow :D
