Since an opinion of 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 was the part of the original question - my vote would be for 640 x 480 is fine but then again 800 x 600 seems to be the norm of most websites.

Everything has to viewed on my 15" laptop screen - so I'm fine either way

As you mentioned, changing the layout is something I'd like to do but it's not very easy, unfortunately. The theme we use is designed with the left bar built in and at its core. Switching to some other theme has to be done carefully to avoid making other areas worse. Writing a new theme or modifying one is possible, but requires a fair bit of work.

I had family staying with me for about a month, my brother just got married and now is preparing to move out of the country, and I'm totally slammed at work. Once life settles down I'll work on this and other improvements to the site.
 
Boy bet your ready for a vacation :) I whole month? My sister and I are fine for a couple days but something would give after a month.
