math problem help

OK, so this has just been bugging me and I wanted to make sure I was correct about it.

If the diameter of the field of view of a microscope @ 40x is 400 micrometers, what is the diameter of the field of view @ 10x.

So some part of me says 1600, but I really can't backup/explain how I got it. It just sorta....goes. Yes/No? reasoning?

Assume cheapest microscope available out there and resulting features. It's an entry level lab class, which is why I'm kind of mad at myself for not getting this answer right off the bat.

FoV is inversely proportional to magnification, so the 1600 makes sense.

But is it linearly or exponentially so?
