So it looks like the Hannah alkalinity reagent is off (the API strip was reporting ~8.3 dKH). And the refractometer has drifted a bit, down to 1.020 when showing 1.026 specific gravity.

Would it be possible to glue a layer of coral putty on the parts you want trimmed and let it die off enough that it's easy(ier) to remove?

I would just be careful with a Dremel in a partially full tank. I don't know about other model but mine is not auto shutoff if you were to release it. So if you drop it in the water.... I might try the long-handled cutters first

I think the biggest takeaway for me (besides learning what the heck Chrysophytes are) was the utility of copepods/amphipods for controlling diatoms etc.
