Alkalinity seems off in fresh saltwater mix

So I measured out ~7 gallons (essentially 2 5gal home depot buckets filled to the 3.5 gallon mark) and 1680 grams of Instant Ocean Reef crystals mix (two large bowls worth, I may go to a more accurate measuring device) = 1.030 specific gravity. Added 1 gallon of water got me to 1.026. Mixed at...

...and then there were three! A multi-tank journey

I respect your ability to keep things growing and stable in a 10 gallon, I could not. Had to go up to 24 gallon to be successful.

@Reefinglens I can pick one up if you still have one (I'm in the East Bay).

Alkalinity seems off in fresh saltwater mix

I calibrated each time for a while, then once a week, and now once a month. It was due for a calibration... I kinda do a rough calculation, I know that ~20 gallons + 3 large scoops was giving me about the approximate salinity. I could measure the salt out by weight and water by volume more...

Alkalinity seems off in fresh saltwater mix

So it looks like the Hannah alkalinity reagent is off (the API strip was reporting ~8.3 dKH). And the refractometer has drifted a bit, down to 1.020 when showing 1.026 specific gravity.

Alkalinity seems off in fresh saltwater mix

I calibrated it about a month ago I can double check it

Alkalinity seems off in fresh saltwater mix

My alkalinity was a bit low recently (7-7.5 dKH range) when it's been in the 9-10 range in the previous months. I tested some fresh saltwater (mixed a couple days ago) and the Alk was measuring ~6.0 dKH (Instant Ocean Reef crystals). Reports online and my experience has this salt mix giving me...

Advice to cut rock-hard coral underwater?

Would it be possible to glue a layer of coral putty on the parts you want trimmed and let it die off enough that it's easy(ier) to remove?

Advice to cut rock-hard coral underwater?

I would just be careful with a Dremel in a partially full tank. I don't know about other model but mine is not auto shutoff if you were to release it. So if you drop it in the water.... I might try the long-handled cutters first

BRS series on cycling ("biome cycle")

I think the biggest takeaway for me (besides learning what the heck Chrysophytes are) was the utility of copepods/amphipods for controlling diatoms etc.

BRS series on cycling ("biome cycle")

BRS has a nice series out on their cycling method. Ep 2 in particular has a nice overview of the various pest microrganisms (dinos, diatoms, cyano etc). I used their method to start and cycle my current tank and avoided a prolonged ugly stage. And so far so good no big issues for a year and a...

Haha I used to volunteer there when I was in grad school. It is a bit small but still pretty fun.

Recommendations for dosing system for a small tank (24 gallon)

Thanks for the all the advice. I think I'll purchase a Kamoer system (thanks @Srt4eric for the offer but it'd easier to just get one shipped from online).

Recommendations for dosing system for a small tank (24 gallon)

I've been doing 25% weekly water change for the past year or so (tank has had fish + corals for about that time). I've started noticing a drop in Alk over time (around Dec/Jan) and the gravity doser seemed to be keeping up when I added it back then. It's probably a bit overkill but it'll cut...

Recommendations for dosing system for a small tank (24 gallon)

Moved my 24 gallon tank to the 1st floor and I can't use the simple gravity system I was using. Anyone have a recommendation for a good, reliable dosing system for a small one like mine. It's primarily going to be dosing All-for-reef and occasionally Kalkwasser as needed.

    Aggressive new fish

Alright so update....I moved the Clown's nest (an aquarium decoration hollow globe with openings and a couple Duncans attached) from the right side to the left side because the Cherubfish was hanging out in a little cave on the right hand side near the Clown's nest. Guess who decided to also...

Super glue & sand rock bonding technique

Yes I used those (the Marco-400) to make my rockscape; bonding the various pieces with the mix. So far no problem; seems pretty strong. I also covered the junctions with sand so they're not noticeable. I might try this method (glue+sand) next time since it did take at least a day (I don't...

    Aggressive new fish

It's a 24 gallon, so a bit small. The last Cherub we had was very gentle and not aggressive at all. Might have been an anomaly.
