    Activated Carbon: HHLE Smoking Gun

Well... Think of it like claiming that sex without condoms is the smoking gun for HIV infection. There are certainly other ways, say needlesharing or blood transfusion, but this is one confirmed causative factor. Actually, I don't think there are any other confirmed causative factors for...

    Activated Carbon: HHLE Smoking Gun

Take away part of that article for me is that the lignite carbon used in the study was UNWASHED. In other words, make sure you rinse the hell out of your carbon if you plan on using it, and don't let it tumble/grind to create powder. We use lignite in a bunch of different systems...

    Copperband Butterfly

We just QT them in small tanks with some live rock and then feed the crap out of them. There is an article in Reefs Magazine where I detail our QT procedure. Generally CBBs from Australia fare a lot better too. If you want to spend a bit extra, Marginalis butterflies are essentially...

    Copperband Butterfly

Nah, they ignore the broccoli, it's the pieces of shrimp in between they crave. ;) The broccoli just looks to them like something that deserves close inspection. These guys make their living poking around in nooks and crannies, not searching the water column for food. You can use an old dead...

    Copperband Butterfly

What I've had luck with: Live blackworms and live enriched brine. These are nearly surefire foods to start with. Feed it 6-8 times a day if it will eat it. After it seems "comfy" in the tank, chop up shrimp into a paste, and then smash it into a small piece of broccoli. Rubber band the...

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

No idea really. I haven't actually seen that thing in operation, only diagrams. On paper, it looks like it'd work great. Do the original Tunzes work well?

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

Here are some diagrams of what I'm babbling about:

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

It's been a long time since I've studied skimmer physics, but from what I remember for a bubble of a given size the amount of organics that it can pick up are dependent on the distance it travels and the time it takes to do so. So yes, you would want the bubble to travel the furthest distance...

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

To be clear, low flow through the skimmer INCREASES the contact time.

Shrimp doing something nasty at Neptune

Hey, all you need is a couple gallons and about $20 to buy the cone snail...

Shrimp doing something nasty at Neptune

Once upon a time I added two peppermint shrimp to a cone snail exhibit in order to keep Aiptasia at bay. I assume the shrimp did something along these lines to the cone snail, because later that day I found two shrimp corpses. Moral of the story: Do not f*** with cone snails.

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

I don't think putting gate valves on both sides of the tee is necessary. Trying to estimate flow coming out of the riser pipe is tricky. Easiest way I've found to do it is slip a pipe on it with two elbows (the water makes a "u turn") pointing down and then catch all the water in a 1...

How much flow into a Euro Reef rs8?

IMO the amount of water fed into a recirc skimmer should be based on the volume of your system. Too much flow can be counterproductive because it just pushes the smallest (read "best") air bubbles out the bottom of the skimmer. Generally I try to dial down the flow enough so that the...

Treating Montipora eating nudibranchs with potassium permanganate

Hey Jonathon, I forgot your screen name on here but figured out it was you with all that latin talk! Where are you getting the nudibranchs from? Really interested in seeing how that works out for you!

Treating Montipora eating nudibranchs with potassium permanganate

I didn't see the bit about camel shrimp before it was edited, but I have seen them offered as an AEFW treatment too. The idea is that you place the coral in a basket with the shrimp for no more than a few minutes.

BAR Meeting April 9th featuring Randy Reed from Reed Mariculture

Can you explain this to everyone? I'm sure this info is out there if I searched enough but kinda curious what Randy says. :D

Treating Montipora eating nudibranchs with potassium permanganate

How about nuking the encrusted stuff with NaOH or CaOH like you would Aiptasia? :D

For those of you with marine FO tanks

Chris is a top notch fish keeper, and a great guy to boot. I saw that tank in person a few weeks ago and man is it nice. There are some fish in there that I will likely never see in person again in this lifetime.

    Couple questions about UV Sterilizers...

We use them to keep free floating ciliates down in sea dragon systems. Otherwise there is not much use for them, especially in a reef tank. For the size of a home tank GAC is going to clear your water up a hell of a lot simpler and cheaper.

    Bartlett's Anthias Pseudanthias bartlettorum Breeding

Anthias will spawn daily if they're in good condition. I caught my Randall's doing it a few times this week. In our big tank at "dusk" if you stare at the tank for more than a few minuts you'll see our lyretails create a feeding frenzy. I hate to say it, but there is very little...
