Looking For Ideas On Oscillating Return Flow

We have a few tanks at work that do this. Just pairs of in tank powerheads and 2 timers. 4-6 hours on each, 15-30 minute overlap. Rinse, repeat. I looked into doing it on a small tank and the conversation in my head went very much like this thread. I almost had a digital timer wired up...

    CAS Donation Hall of Fame

Hi all, I recently started what I hope will be a bit of a tradition of taking photos of coral donations that people have given to us. Both as a way to acknowledge these great gifts that we depend on, but to also show what kind of growth is possible to accomplish in captive corals. I'm...

Was surfing the web looking at fish and found Thales.

Georgia Aquarium has a large school of several hundred that they paid a king's ransom for. Considering the size and looks they are incredibly expenisve to purchase *healthy*.

Zapping aptasia, what I've learned "so far"

I'm extremely skeptical that hydrogen gas is doing the dirty work. I'm also skeptical that these do anything more than kalkwasser or lye does--any word if the anemones pop right back up in a couple weeks?

muriatic acid to clean base rocks.

How much baking soda depends a lot on factors I can't predict. If you leave the HCl solution on the rocks long enough the solution will neutralize itself by dissolving CaCO3. You are essentially creating baking soda by adding live rock and HCl together. Long story short you can use pH...

muriatic acid to clean base rocks.

We use muriatic acid all the time. The "pure" stuff (actually about 38% HCl) is super super gnarly. You should be able to find it at pool supply stores. Don't open it indoors. It releases a lot of fumes in its pure form that are dangerous, so obviously don't stick your face near the lid...

    Nutrient Rich vs Nutrient Poor

Even when hobby test kits are reading "zero", there is still plenty of inorganic NO3 and PO4 present in an aquarium that neither of these are limiting for corals. IME softies seem to be ambivalent to the NO3 and PO4 concentrations, but seem to grow faster in lightly skimmed or heavily fed...

FREE Coral Rubble from the Steinhart Aquarium

Anathema, try emailing me again. I missed your last one somehow. Someone is coming to pick up our last 2 buckets tomorrow. However, I plan on grabbing another bucket or two this Saturday.

Food grade caustic soda (lye) anyone?

Wow, really? That is odd. Have you tried an ACE Hardware? They had Rooto last time I was in one. I imagine if you wanted to have a bag of it sent to your work or whatever Gallade would ship it to you. They probably just need to deliver to a business address.

Tips for kepping a Powder Blue Tang?

For a home tank, the most important criteria IMHO is to just give it a home free from other tangs. They'll have plenty to graze on if you don't have a lot of other algae eaters. These are not as tough as some people make them out to be. For what it's worth a PBT will harass any...

FREE Coral Rubble from the Steinhart Aquarium

Oh, also--if you don't want these for calcium reactors, the pieces are just the right size to mount tiny 1/4"-1/2" frags onto. The other thing we do with them is place some Xenia, sponge, Nephthea, mushrooms, mini carpets, etc on a small bed or tray of the rubble and then wait for it to attach...

FREE Coral Rubble from the Steinhart Aquarium

What Rich said! I am amazed at how many people have already contacted me so far so I will try to get back to you all tomorrow if not tonight. FYI we have a ton (literally) of this stuff so we should be able to get some for everyone and we are not in a rush to get rid of it. Also, some...

Hi all, we have a whole pallet of surplus coral rubble. This is large pinky knuckle sized chunks that are composed entirely of calcium carbonate. You can take as much as you want for free. Right now I have about 30 gallons of it but will have much more soon. PLEASE DO NOT reply to this...
