For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

What's interesting is that a reference from this paper claims: "coral reef waters during daytime is always accompanied by hyperoxia" They measure DO between 27% (1.67 mg/L) to 241% (14.19 mg/L) over a full day-night cycle on the coral reef. Of course, our aquariums are not direct analogs...

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm wondering about. I suspect photosynthesis is the primary producer of DO in our aquariums, and fish do consume some DO. Perhaps a fish-heavy system lightly stocked with corals and other photosynthetic organisms will have more 'normal' DO levels yielding a...

    Looking for larger coral

I've got some bird of paradise seriatopora (on DBTC) that grows really quickly under the right conditions. Happy to give you a frag if you'd like.

@Matt_Wandell, I recently posted a thread about pH/DO and coral calcification rates (link). The authors of this study found that in addition to pH, DO plays a major role in calcification (measured in lab grown A. Millepora). While raising pH increased calcification rates under normoxia...

    Andrew's Red Sea Reefer 250

Today I noticed some sponges in the cryptic zones of my sump: I think these are pretty neat, and a sign that my tank is maturing. Almost at the 1 year mark... Did some maintenance on my algae turf scrubber. This is an air driven unit from Santa Monica: I probably could go longer before...

    DBTC: Bird of Paradise Seriatopora

I just added Bird of Paradise Seriatopora to DBTC. Easy SPS. Pickup in San Jose. Standard rules + must have a tank journal. There are 3 frag(s) available right now. This thread was automatically created by BARcode

IM EXT 200 Peninsula Aquarium w∕ APS Stand - White

Dude, tank is way too small for that stock. Give it back to the LFS or get a larger tank. Joking aside, tank looks great. Glad you got it in place.

I was surprised to learn dark calcification is even a thing. I assumed that calcification was directly tied to photosynthesis happening in the zooxanthellae.

Yeah for sure. I personally think part of what makes this hobby fun is having stuff to chase and seeing results (good or bad!) :) I'm curious to see how my O2 and pH numbers compare to what the authors found for best daytime calcification rate: pH 8.4 and O2 100% (6 mg/L). I know my pH runs...

PSA: New Red Sea Salt Mix formula

Thanks for posting this. I'm planning on switching from Reef Crystals to Red Sea (not Pro). Reef crystals mixes to a really high 11 dKH. I'd rather start with something lower, and dose it up to where I run my tank (around 9.5). I've used Red Sea Pro in the past, and seem to recall it mixed...

Hi All, I've been seeing a lot of discussion about pH in the hobby lately. Unlike many years ago when I started the hobby, there is now a trend to chase pH. Guys like Chris at ACI have been very vocal proponents of pH as a primary driver of coral growth. Clearly, this works for him and his...

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

For what it's worth: I've been consistently getting 10-14 days out of my scrubber media. I run a BRS scrubber on a Reefer 250 (54g). I'm using the BRS media but plan to switch to the 5g jorgensen jug when I run out. As @Arvin R pointed out, it's a tad under $4 per refill. The way I look at it...
