Really, I've done a lot of research on them and i've never heard anyone say that. Blennies in general pick at rock for food, that's why they are believed to have short flat heads. Maybe you can try changing up their diet or putting a chunk of food on a rock near by so they go at that instead...

I like the settling area because I wouldn't have to clean a sock and I could just vacuum that area when I do water changes.
