    plastic overflow

There's a variety of HOB siphon-based overflows, which mostly work but can be very risky. Because they are siphon based, if the siphon breaks the drain stops flowing and your display can overflow. So I would not recommend this style of overflow unless you have your tank in a sealed fishroom...

    70 Gal Keith Grandt tank

How is the tank doing? I'd love to see some updated pictures and here how it's been.

    First Maxima Clam

Did I tell you the irony is that when we got here and setup this tank I ended up buying the same lights again from a BRS member? I told myself they'd likely sit in the basement and I wouldn't use them but ended up having a tank up a month or so after we got here.

    First Maxima Clam

We've added an adult (6-7") Maxima in our new tank a few weeks ago. Seems like he's been doing well, but the added demand for alk/calc were a good motivator to get our dosing pumps up and running.

Scam Alert: "Encompass All" Felt Filter Socks

I bought two 8 packs of 4"x8" felt filter socks made by "Encompass All" via Amazon and they completely disintegrated into felt tufts the first time I washed them. I washed them with warm water and a cup of bleach (as I've always done with felt socks). Thankfully, I had 2 quality filter socks...

    Eshopps Eclipse Overflow Install

These hole saws still have some teeth on them, I'd be glad to if I were still living on the peninsula. It's a rough commute from Boston.

    pH probe calibration problem

I just went through this and soaked my probes in vinegar/scrubbed them to get all the deposits and algae growth off of them. I used the individual Pinpoint 3-pack to recalibrate the pH and ORP probes. Seemed to have gone well (pH was reading overly high, ORP overly low)...

Stocking Plan for 40BR Humble Reef

The Rainford's goby has been coming out during feeding time now, though he seems happier hunting pods and sand sifting than eating frozen. I was lucky to finally capture a few pictures of him tonight:

    Reef Hobbyist 40B

I wasn't able to fit the tall strainer in the drains in my new external overflow box, but reading this post inspired me to get a flat/low-profile strainer for the main bulkhead between the internal/external portions of the overflow to keep snails/fish out of the external box/drains.

    Power failure backup equipment

+1 for the Penn Plax dead simple battery fail-safe airstone pumps. I've used them on our tanks and they're a great last line of defense and so cheap. They have an excellent reputation in the Boston club and one of the fundamental new reefer recommendations as a first line of defense.

Stocking Plan for 40BR Humble Reef

So the Rainford's Goby is out of QT and into the display, where he has promptly made a home in the back of the rockwork where I'll probably never see him again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We picked up two black ice clowns from a local breeder. They're chilling out in QT this week and I'm hoping to find a RBTA...

Stocking Plan for 40BR Humble Reef

I've owned some fancy designer clowns, but honestly the happiest/healthiest fish we've had were locally aquacultured, juvenile ocellaris. If there's a school of fish locally, I'll probably buy some from someone in the Boston club out here.

Stocking Plan for 40BR Humble Reef

I think the pygmy wrasse might be too much to have in terms of pod eaters - we'll probably stick to just the Rainard's Goby and a Mandarin.

Stocking Plan for 40BR Humble Reef

Our new 40BR display/30gal sump is fully operational and just finished cycling last week. There's nothing but macroalgae and copepods living in the tank as of today, but we're starting to plan our fish stocking list and I'll probably buy our first coral this weekend. I'd love feedback and...

    Kessil Support is Awesome

Looking good! No regrets for selling them to you, glad they're in a good home. I think it was the right bet at the time, it just turns out in this instance I was able to get a tank up sooner than expected. They are metric and seemed to have a weird thread on them. Or maybe I'm just bad at...

    Kessil Support is Awesome

I sold them and my whole tank :-/ I wasn't sure how much time/space we'd have for a new tank here so I decided to err on the side of selling off whatever I could. I would have been better off keeping my sump, lights, etc if I knew then what I know now - but I was afraid they'd all just sit in...

    Kessil Support is Awesome

I recently bought a pair of used Kessil A350Ws without mounting hardware, so I ordered goosenecks to mount them. Unfortunately, when the goosenecks arrived a week or two later I realized the mounting screws that hold the Kessils to the goosenecks were missing from the lights and I couldn't...

    IMPORTANT: Please Refrain from Lurking

We're just getting our 40BR up and running in Boston, but I'll probably be more active once that's running. I've been trying to post things both here and in the Boston club (BRS).

    Anyone run a sump outdoors?

Terence Fugazi from Neptune built a massive sump under his house in a similar fashion, you can read about it in his epic build thread on Reef2Reef: http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/gilroy-425g-build-thread-all-apex-all-the-time.198797/
