Beautiful Stands in Standard Sizes? (40 breeder)

We've gotten settled back on the east coast and I picked up a nice 40 breeder display tank. I'm planning to drill it and install a synergy reef overflow. However, I haven't found many nice cabinet/stands around the area. For our last tank, I got lucky with a beautiful cherry finished DSA...

    Part-time Skimming! I'm switching over!

I'm excited for this. I'd love to hear how it turns out. It's my hypothesis that we went a bit overboard with the nutrient export on our 90gal tank and the corals would have been happier with slightly higher nutrient loads. Nitrate/phosphate were always too close to 0 or ULNS levels.

MH / LED usage in 2016

Thanks to @Vhuang168 and everyone for highlighting our tank, I appreciate it. We were proud of the growth and color for mostly DBTC and cheap frags under LEDs. I'm sure folks who are connoisseurs of designer corals/colors didn't see anything exceptional in our tank, but that was by design -...

4/23 Neptune Aquatics does damage to enderturtle's wallet! [nano fishies/zoas]

That green clown goby is beautiful and one of the fish I've always liked. We had one in our first tank.

Need to borrow a chiller ASAP!

I used two inexpensive, high speed fans mounted in my sump above my return chamber to cool our tank in the hot weather. They were turned on and off by our Apex controller, but you can get by with a bit of that done manually as well. Just make sure you have a top-off mechanism to handle the...

    Does "live sand" go bad?

I think we bought 3x 20lb bags of generic black petco sand: http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/petco-black-aquarium-sand I picked it up at the local petco to avoid paying hefty shipping due to weight. I think it was $30 total.

    Does "live sand" go bad?

I would strongly advise not wasting money on "live sand". Just buy a high quality dry sand and add a cup of live sand from someone elses tank or better yet, some live rock rubble or something. Even if the sand begins live, sitting anoxic in a bag for months is more likely to produce hydrogen...

    In the beginning...

Tank looks great! I don't want to hijack your build thread, but I'd agree with @Enderturtle 's sketicism about the Pax Bellum reactors. I'm sure they work and they're nice, but growing chaetomorpha or other macro-algae isn't likely enough nutrient export for a tank that size. For the same...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I've decided to offer up my ATO reservoir and mixing/water barrel: Advanced Acrylics Diamond ATO Reservoir 14gal (8x20x20) Brute 28 gallon mixing - SOLD to @Vhuang168 The water mixing barrel was setup to screw into the RODI output line and fill up 25 gallons at a time, then shut itself off...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I'm psyched. Two of the Kessil A350s went to @Bruce Spiegelman, Sump is going to @Vhuang168, and skimmer to @tygunn . I've still got another A350N, 2x MP40s (and Apex WxM), an AutoAqua SmartATO, and some other stuff up for sale if people want them.

    Drain sizing

I would run either 1.25 or 1.5 from the 1" bulkhead to the sump, whatever is easier to plumb. If you run this as a herbie/bean animal, you're going to be throttling the 1" drain anyway (I would guess). Generally the flow restriction is more about the return lines and the head loss on the pump...

    TGunn's 90g Reef

After talking with you guys last night, I'm debating keeping all of my dry goods. So do let me know if you're interested in the MP40s, Kessil A350s, the sump, or the skimmer.

    TGunn's 90g Reef

I'm excited for you, @tygunn - I hope the tank works as well for you as it did for me. For sump selection, the frame on the front is narrower that the overall width - so stand is probably 38" external across, but opening to the cabinet is maybe 31", so my 30" sump was a snug fit going in and...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Well, the tank and stand are totally gone and beginning a new life with @tygunn. I hope it works out great. I want to make a huge shoutout and thank you to @<3-2-reef and his father who came through with a backup minivan, expertise in tank moving, and helping hands. We would have not been...

TGunn's First 37g in the Bay Area

Tyler - I'm both psyched you're getting the chance to upgrade and that the tank is going to a good home. I think you'll love it and it's the most tank you can fit in a small space (which is why I bought it).

    Tank Breakdown: Full Colonies

Thanks for the kind words @siokoy. I believe many of the big montis in my tanks were originally from you. I think @MolaMola ended up with the huge purple colony in her DBTC/classroom tank, which began as a humble 1-2" frag you gave me a year or so ago.

    Tank mover?

Big thanks to folks who've offered to help. This should be a super easy move on the pickup, you should be able to put the van right outside our front door so maybe 20 feet and no stairs.
