    Tank Breakdown: Full Colonies

Sadly, we're moving in April and I'm breaking down our 90gal mixed reef. Much of the coral has already gone to new homes, but here's what's left: Basketball sized green birdsnext colony Softball sized maroon/green body acropora colony Softball size green montipora confusa colony baseball...

    Woohoo, tank upgrade!

I think buying a used tank is a great idea. Tanks haven't changed much in the last 10 years and one that was built well and taken care of should be fine at a bargain price. If we weren't in such a hurry to get our tank up on day 1 here I would have looked for a used tank. I'll probably take...

    Coral Dip Casualties and Questions

It sounds that way. How much did you rinse the coral after dipping? Ideally you setup a dipping container and then a larger rinse container you can soak the coral in post-dip.

What Are you Bringing to the Frag Swap?

I don't know that I can make it, but I imagine you'll be seeing lots of the hollywood stunner, red, green, and purple montiporas from our tanks.

    Think it's overkill!?!

That rockflower anemone is looking great. I had a big red one like that, grew to be almost 4-5" across. I believe @Corallus has it now.

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

After a vinegar bath our cursed MP40 is working fine again. We've given away about half of our coral over the last few days. I'm glad @MolaMola took our gigantic purple montipora and two large rocks fused with coral (also home to a small neon green monti, red cyphastrea, red monti, a green...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I'll still be involved on the forums and you guys are welcome to come and take some more coral for your tank.

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Thanks for all the kind words. The club has been a great community - both for my time in the hobby and for the great people I've met. Boston is home for us, where the friends, family and Maisie's grandparents are. It's also somewhere we can afford to rent/buy without the boom town prices on...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I had to leave the tank on auto-pilot for 10 days while I was in Boston and everything went OK. I can't believe how much coraline was growing on my front glass after not scraping for 14 days, little 5mm islands of purple all over. Skimer silencer is working great. The new MP40 wetside is a...

The Apex WXM Module SUCKS compared to the Reef Link!!! (Radion LED Light Programming)

I got the WxM for my Vortechs and I'd say it's a total waste of money, though it is nice to be able to turn the Vortechs on/off with a software switch in my Fusion dashboard. Not worth paying money, though.

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I've been struggling to raise our phosphate. Even after cutting back on the amount of GFO media and frequency of water changes, phosphate was < 0.01 ppm (6 ppb ULR) when I measured last night. Our refugium grows chaeto out of control on our 10 hour reverse light cycle (midnight to 10am). I...

    Help with picking skimmer

I would echo the folks who suggest you go one size up for your tank. I run a similar mixed reef (90g/30g sump) with a heavy load and run a Reef Octopus 150SSS which has been great. I would recommend a BM Curve 7 or 9 or one of the Reef Octopus 150s.

    EnderTurtle's 40 gallon breeder LPS

I think the deeper your tank is, the more difficult is can be to match both light and flow to LPS and SPS both. In our nano 29gal tank with cheaper gear and worse nutrient export, I had very colorful SPS and LPS living in harmony - but our rockwork was only 12" high and SPS were 3-4" below...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I noticed the chaeto in my refugium grew so much that 1/2" of dead chaeto had risen above the surface (it'd grown down to the bottom and was pushing up out of the water). I culled about 1-1.5 cubic feet of chaeto today, so now the fuge is back to being half full. It seems my experiment running...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Chalices as a whole can be very aggressive. This stunner is no exception, each of the fluorescent green "eyes" (polyps) will release 1-3" sweepers an hour or two after dark and can damage surrounding corals if they're in reach. Like most marine aggression, it's generally the most intense...

Yee Haw! My RockFlower Nems have SEXUALLY REPRODUCED! Nem Babies!

What size is the parent? The bright red one I got is now about 6" across.

+1 for giving them room, these guys are super aggressive, but they are hardy and fast growing.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear the coral are doing well. Having the tank in our living room is a good motivator to solve noise problems :)

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I finally received my MP40 back from ecotech, with a brand new MP40wQD wetside. It looks much nicer than the MP40wES wetsides, with the impeller secured on both ends like the MP10 wet sides. I haven't had time to set it up yet, but I'm hoping to tonight.

    Acanthastrea Lordhowensis => Micromussa Lordhowensis

I'm still going to call them Acans, but I thought it was an interesting article. Naming in this hobby is always a crapshoot for coral, between latin names I can't pronounce/remember and weird coral brands that make no sense. It is exciting when there is new research to place these animals in...
