ROV captures first-ever footage of oarfish in the wild

Spectacular! Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I can't tell from the video what the white blob is on the fish's enlarged anterior dorsal fin that goes up from it's head (and I'm guessing that structure is a part of the dorsal fin). Could be a parasitic copepod, or possible some sort...

    Crabby's Cube

Well, I've decided to do a 'restart' on this tank. The fish all had parasites (ich or oodinium) that they got from a klein's butterfly that I added to eat the aiptasia, and it did eat 'em. I removed the fish to a hospital tank, which was really a death tank, and now I have no fish. And the...

April 13th meeting featuring Gary Parr

It was a fun talk for sure. Thanks Gary! Any chance you would share your text slides? For those interested, there are several apps that can shift the white balance on your iPhone camera. I have no idea of how well they work, but just good to know they exist if you are interested. Just...

    Mantis shrimp, new favorite animal

One more cool fact about mantis shrimp vision; they can see circular polarized light (light waves in certain regular circular orientations). http://ib.berkeley.edu/labs/caldwell/Caldwell%20pdfs/Chiou_etal_2008.pdf

    Dissolved Oxygen Test Recommendations?

The electrode-based systems need to be calibrated periodically, and are sensitive to both temperature and salinity. We use 2% sodium sulfite to make water that has 0% oxygen, and water that is vigorously bubbled as the 100% saturation standard.
