Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Where I'm at right now. Grounded outlet: 7 volts In this order... Unplug heaters: 2V Unplug optical sensor: 1V Unplug skimmer: .6V Unplug all lights: .2V Unplug apex probes (red and blue): 0V Seems like culprit is mainly the heaters. If someone could check their stray voltage I'd really...

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

I think I found a culprit. One of my sensors on my ATK, quite odd. When I unplug one of sensors the reading drops from 2V to 1V which is more of a major drop than I've seen from anything else. I was getting some weird readings last week so that's why I checked it.

I have 4 of their metal brackets and all are partially submerged in the water. Just unplugged all the lights and reading only dropped from 2V to 1.8V.

I have a meter, I just want to compare my reading to other people's readings to see if a normal tank is actually sitting at 0 or <1 volts. Unplugging my heaters drops me 5 volts so down to 2.2 volts while grounded.

Yeah that's what I'm working on right now. Unplugging my pump actually raises the voltage reading... any idea why?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Would anyone be willing to test the voltage in their tank for me if they have a multimeter? Curious what everyone is sitting at. I just put the red lead into my sump and the black on my ground and read the AC Voltage. I unplugged the heaters and dropped to 2.1 volts which was about 5 volts from...

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Yeah that exact concept (same as like a bird landing on a power line) was why I was thinking this may not be an actual issue. As long as there's no path to ground there should be no current, however I am not sure if it is somehow grounding else where that I am unaware of which would then mean...

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Ok thank you. I would like to include my coral have been looking worse this week. I thought it was because I was a week behind on my water change but it seems like this may have been the culprit. I’m gonna try to isolate the voltage while grounded now and see if i can find the 7 volt source

It’s more like 28-30 volts. Plugged it into a grounded outlet as someone recommended and it dropped to 7 volts. Still too many? Is the goal here 0?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

I think there's a combination of things going on here from my experimentation but I think it may have to do with Apex. When I have my COR-20 connected to the apex with the aquabus cable I read 29 volts, but when I unplug that aquabus I read only 17 volts (I can still feel this though). However...

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Is having stray voltage in the tank a big issue? I'm really having trouble locating what's causing it. I'm able to get an electrician to come out tomorrow to work on the outlet though

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

will this make a difference if my outlet itself isn’t grounded though? Because i presume this just plugs into an outlet and the item presumes the outlet is grounded and then grounds it from there?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

After some experimenting with a multimeter i set up in the tank and grounded, it appears there is no one item that is contributing to the stray voltage. The largest is my return pump. which is about 10 of the 30 volts. Does it still mean there is some 'major issue' if I cannot locate one item...

No UV. I'll get back to searching, it must somehow be a combination of two things I think? Does it mean anything that I can only feel it when standing in certain places?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Not the heaters. I have 2 and even with them both unplugged I feel it. It happens when either of my outlets are plugged in so I think it may be an outlet issue.

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Measured it with a multimeter and got around 25 volts running from the tank to the ground

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

@Coral reefer Was right. Just tested the outlet with a multimeter and it's not grounded. Guess I'll get an electrician out here and hope that remedies the issue. In the mean time is there a concern with the current (or voltage?) running through the tank?

Any way around this other than an electrician?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Super confused here. I only do not feel it when everything is unplugged. My tank uses 2 outlets and if I unplug both outlets I do not feel it, but when either one of them is plugged in I feel it. How could this be? Any ideas here?

Very Puzzling Thing Came Up - Any Ideas?: Stray Voltage

Update: I think I determined it's definitely electric... I was wrong. I went to the tank again and felt it again and did some investigating. I can only feel it in certain locations and did find one other person who can slightly feel it. So it must just be grounding. Time to do some investigating...
