It's only for flavor as far as I know....maybe the higher heat it generates helps cook the starch in the beans to thicken them? -Gregory

When out of lard a pound of bacon rendered down for the fat and cracklings does just fine..... :) However, if your objections are health related this may not be a viable option.... Note: I prefer bacon fat to lard in refritos... but lard makes the most awesome pie crusts!!!! -Gregory

OK... tell the truth. How hard are acroporas really?

Very cool... thanks for the replies guys. Everything is pretty stable in the tank. Like I said the montis and pocillipora are doing very well and growing... They were procured at the swap and are already encrusting the rocks with new growth and forming plates. I haven't started testing for Mg...

OK... tell the truth. How hard are acroporas really?

I am having very good success with monti's and pocilopora (sp?). They look great and are putting on what I consider fast growth from what I was expecting. So now I'm thinking that maybe I'll try an acro or two. 1) Are they really that much harder? 2) Are there some that are more forgiving...

    Brooklynella outbreak...

Note: This was with clown fish and they are VERY hardy to begin with. I'm not sure how your other fish would fair with a 20 min dip. Afterwards the original tank was allowed to run for 60 days with no fish so the brooklynella could run its course and die with no host. I think the I read 30 days...

    Brooklynella outbreak...

Had this issue a few years ago...... Formilin didn't work. Nor did any of the other remedies and I lost 5 fish..... Based on the advice of Tuberider (Jeremy) I did a freshwater dip. BUT it was a loooooong one. Water was buffered with 1/4 tp of baking soda per gal and brought to temp. The dip was...

    Are my corals eating?

OK... really stupid question. How do I know if my sps are eating? When I had softies and gorgonians it was easy to tell by watching the polyps... with sps there really is no change. My monti digi retracts a VERY small amount. But all the others never change. The food offered is a variety of...
