Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

The Mandarins continue spawning about once a month. I caught them doing their dance tonight after lights out, around 11:15pm despite hassles from the currents, shrimps, and cardinal fish eager to eat their spawn. I tried to capture a few cell phone videos, but low light and blue moonlights...

Hollywood Stunner Chalice in Mountain View

Sure thing. PM me for my address and we'll arrange a pickup time. Most evenings this week and anytime this weekend are probably good.

Sure thing, PM me for my address and time to stop by. Next weekend is easiest, but we can also do evenings this week.

Hollywood Stunner Chalice in Mountain View

Thank you! I trimmed them all and gave away about 10 frags at the frag swap (montis and chalices, mostly) but I need to do another round soon. They are cutting off light to the lower levels and growing horizontally into some of the acropora colonies. I've been lazy about keeping them trimmed...

Hollywood Stunner Chalice in Mountain View

I've got several large frags and colonies of Hollywood Stunner Chalice for pickup in Mountain View on DBTC. You should have an established tank with a tank journal on BAR forums, the usual DBTC rules. You can see a few of the parent colonies in this top down shot on the bottom middle and left...

First Time Snorkeling on a Wild Reef

Wow! Awesome pictures. You win the thread for taking your own instead of re-posting examples :)

First Time Snorkeling on a Wild Reef

I would guess this was a pretty good snorkeling spot relative to Kauai, but mostly it was a unique experience for me going snorkeling again with a better education. You see so much more when you recognize the different animals and their behavior. It made me grateful for the time in the hobby...

I PMed you. Happy to give you one of the Hollywood Stunner colonies if you pick it up.

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Don't sweat it, I should have upgraded the containers before we left but I'm always reluctant to make any changes so soon before a trip. I have tons of Hollywood Stunner, monti caps, and some tri-color acropora. I'll give whole colonies of the stunner away if anyone wants them. I have some...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

I'm happy to say our tank survived 10 days on autopilot while we were in Hawaii. Both dosing reservoirs were totally tapped out by the time I got home, which led to the Alk dropping to 8 dkh which is not good but not awful. I'm going to have to upgrade to larger reservoirs for alk/calc -...

First Time Snorkeling on a Wild Reef

I've been in the hobby for 3 years now and I've been snorkeling in the past, but I recently came back from a vacation where I went snorkeling on a lively reef in Kauai for the first time since getting involved in the hobby. It was a mind blowing experience for me to see so many of the fish and...

[Urgent] What the hell is this and how to fix it?

Glad to hear it's going better. Please follow up and let us know if this resolved it. Is there any way to test for pthalates? The evidence seems to support something like that from your candles.

    One more time...

I would advise changing your target temperature range as others have suggested. I target 78 in the winter and 77 in the summer. On hot days, I use thermostat controlled fans to keep the tank at 80 or below by evaporative cooling (one on display and one in sump). We run a window A/C on hot days...

    70 Gal Keith Grandt tank

Looks awesome! I hope you get it all cycled and maturing soon, I'd love to give you some coral for it. Maybe the Acan colony from the grow out will do better in this tank once it's up and running?

[Urgent] What the hell is this and how to fix it?

TLDR: if you want to treat for this, ditch candles or smoky pollutants, run a lot more carbon. Good luck!

[Urgent] What the hell is this and how to fix it?

I'm happy to help, but I'm on an actual reef until 1/10 in Kauai. This sounds a bit like things I've read about atmospheric phthalates causing a bacterial bloom: http://www.coralmagazine-us.com/content/mystery-white-reef-slime-part-iii Happy to help when I'm back in town on Sunday and beyond.

    70 Gal Keith Grandt tank

Nice job on the plumbing! It looks really clean. There may well be leaks, but don't lose hope - you can always get it sorted out. It always takes a little time to shake down the system and get it all running smoothly. I'd love to hear more of your experience cutting/gluing PVC for the first...
