    Maui Dive Video

Yeah, I definitely appreciate knowing about fish and coral when diving. It's totally fun to either see species I'm familiar with at a whole different scale. It's was also good reference since I'm starting on a coral related project at work. :-D

    Maui Dive Video

My girlfriend and I recently spent a week in Maui. I cut together some of the highlights from our dives, and thought you guys might like to see: I shot this with a GoPro Hero3 using backscatter flip3.1 red filters. I mounted the gopro on the end of a pole, which really helped with those eel...

    Biopellets

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. (and sorry for being MIA). I did end up trying them and my nitrates are lower but I'm dealing with some cyano. I might think about setting up an algae scrubber or using chaeto instead. One issue I've always had with algal based solutions, though, is that once...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

On the software front I've made some progress, too. The basic architecture is that there are "devices", which talk to physical hardware. Devices can have "variables" which are either inputs (read from the hardware), outputs (write to the hardware), or options (configure the behavior of the...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

I've made some progress on this project. I switched to using i2c to drive the relay module, rather than the 15 pin connector. That allowed to really streamline the hardware. I cut a hole in the enclosure and attached a USB jack for connecting to the reef angel. I also wired in the temperature...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

The LCD is a quick and easy way to provide some status information and requires very little work to get up and running. I don't plan to make it the interface through which you use the controller, though. I could write a full linux GUI app, but that would be a lot of work (and is what I do for a...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

Thanks, guys! Good point about the 5v thing, Mark. Maybe that's a good reason to stick with the other setup the pi only talks to the relay expansion module. I think I fixed the picture links. Are they working now?

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

In terms of software, I wanted to start with a web app so I could do everything on either my laptop, tablet, or phone. I decided to do the server software in python (PHP... never again!). I'm using tornado, which is python web framework that makes it super easy to set up a server that can reply...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

Okay here's the basic hardware I started with. The ReefAngel relay box, IO module, relay expansion module, and hub. And of coure, the Raspberry Pi. It wasn't long before I had a mess on my hands: But here it is basically all hooked up. I also got an i2c LCD display kit from adafruit. It's...

    Raspberry Pi/Reef Angel Aquarium Controller

Hey guys. I thought I'd share a project I've been working on. This is going to be super nerdy. Consider yourself warned. :) For a long time now I've thought it would be fun to build my own aquarium controller. I'm pretty sure I can get the software end working, and I have some experience with...

    Biopellets

I'm wondering what everyone's experience with biopellets is? Have they been effective at nitrate reduction for you?

    Site load times

That's pretty fascinating, bayview. I tried on a couple occasions to get to the bottom of our performance problems but ultimately I was unsuccessful. It doesn't appear to be related to the amount of computation (CPU utilization is quite low) or transfer speed. I ultimately figured it had to do...

    Denzil's 40B with 20L Sump-Fuge

Just a suggestion on the frame.... a butt joint (like you have where the vertical supports connect to the horizontal apron) isn't very strong, even with pocket screws. If you instead inset the leg (like is shown in Charlie's drawing) you can put screws through the legs into the apron, which...

Got Pictures? Please help me complete a Wikipedia page

That's awesome! What a great idea. I just uploaded a photo of a green banded goby. Would you mind adding it to the page? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GreenBandedGoby.jpg

    mysis

I ran out of frozen mysis yesterday and the place I normally get it, Albany Aquarium, isn't open again until Friday. Does anyone know somewhere else in the Richmond/El Cerrito/Albany/Berkeley area that carries it?

BAR is Grateful to pixelpixi for Her Tenure & Welcomes denzil to the BOD

Thanks, Mike. That was a big motivation for us moving to drupal... being able to do things like tightly integrated DBTC tracking. I'm glad that worked out, even though some other things didn't work as smoothly.

Thanks, guys. My only regret is that I couldn't have done more. I look forward to seeing the great things that I'm sure Denzil will do with the site!
