    add(ing) sand

When i wash sand I add a little de chlorinator to the last rinse, swish the sand around in the dechlorinated water, and then drain it before putting it in the tank. Seems to work okay.

    Old Data - DB Reverted?

Sorry, John. I'm not going to be able to restore today's data. There's just no way to restore from last night's backup while merging in today's posts.

Well, I screwed up. I accidentally deleted the entire "Community Discussion" forum group. (which includes these forums: Events and Announcements, Welcome, Resources, Web Site, and Eutrophic Zone). I meant to delete a test forum that I had created but I was doing multiple things at once and not...

Power usage... what am I doing wrong?

Have you measured how much energy each individual part of the system (lights, heaters, chiller, pumps) is actually using? A key practice when optimizing software is to always measure first and make sure you understand what takes the most time. It's often unintuitive and there's little...

    Emergency Reboot

Our hosting company has to take our server down briefly this morning for an emergency security update to the virtual host container's kernel. It shouldn't be down for long. This is unrelated to the work I did yesterday.

    Site Software Updated

This morning I upgraded our website's core software, drupal, and a dozen or so of its modules with new versions that contain bug fixes and security patches. I hoped that it would also fix a crash that occurs when the search indexer tries to index certain threads. Unfortunately, it didn't fix...

    where is the SEARCH thing?

I'm looking at a search engine called ApacheSOLR. It seems promising, but the setup is quite involved. I was going to try to update us to the latest drupal version too, but it looks like there's a problem with our backup system now, so I'm fixing that before doing any big upgrades.

    where is the SEARCH thing?

Well, the indexer is crashing on certain threads for some reason. I'm having to manually coax it through and hack it to exclude those specific threads until I can figure out what's causing that. Hopefully it will stay fast, but it might just be fast because it doesn't have much content yet...

    where is the SEARCH thing?

Okay, it's re-enabled and working.... sort of. It has to reindex everything and with about 12,000 threads that may take a day or so. In the meantime it's a high load on the server, so it's likely that you will see more frequent errors, timeouts, etc. until it's done. I'll continue...

    where is the SEARCH thing?

Sorry, I didn't see the August 19th posts until just now. Certainly if anyone has questions/concerns about the website PM is a more reliable way to get my attention since I don't read anywhere near all the posts. I'm also sorry that I haven't gotten something in place yet. When I last...
