Tanks Alk consumption has increased 30% over the last 15 days

Do you have sand? Is your sand turning into concrete? I had huge alk consumption in my tank while my sand bed was turning into a giant rock

    Restarting - any tips?

I'd do a peroxide or even an acid bath just to fully clean the rocks and start over with those. The sand.. Idk I'm cheap so I'd probably rinse it well and reuse it. I figure I'd need to rinse the heck out of new sand anyway so why not save the money and rinse the heck out of the existing sand...

    Restarting - any tips?

How have you kept the stuff? Eg has it been sitting in water? Maintained water? Stagnant cold water? Dry It looks like you said it crashed because of construction dust and no power. Could you elaborate? Like. Were they scraping asbestos laden popcorn ceiling and lead paint into your tank...

    Walnut Creek tank buddy

Awesome will have to check it out. Everything I have is growing well ATM -- but not looking to drop $1000 on a fancy shroom or $500 on some single eye chalice frag lol. Perfectly happy with the $10-$20 frags.

    Walnut Creek tank buddy

How is the calikid store? I haven't gone yet but based on their website I assumed it was exclusively super expensive stuff. Might try to swing by if people are meeting up. I'm in Martinez. Fortunately I can cover my tank and have always used an auto feeder so outside of a disaster I can go...

    Chaeto Reactor

Phosban reactors with some cheap Amazon strip grow lights work well. If you want a budget reactor. Just search for diy algae reactor.. its a really common setup. I will say though. If/when I set up mine again, I'll probably use something to keep the lights slightly off the reactor itself. The...

    Coral ID

Bubble gum is on the right. Forest fire harder to see, it's on the left next to the green cap. They are similar -- forest fire has more of a rust colored polyp and dark green skin. Bubble gum more orange polyp and brighter green skin.. So the color in the picture looks more like bubble gum...

    Our Hobbit House

For the record, I had a bunch of laugh emojis on that post that didn't seem to transfer over from mobile -> post. What I said read really critical without those lol sorry! Was laughing at the random post of a full on hobbit house with no context lol

    Our Hobbit House

Is there context that a newer person here might be missing? I feel like there has to be another thread explaining the "why". You can't just post a picture of a full size 2br 1ba hobbit home and leave it at that *Edit* Now I see...

    CFM?

Generally good advice. The cheaper stuff is also usually cheaper because it is easy to keep in tanks, grows fast, and is hard to kill.

    Mollies and diseases

Iv got my needs satisfied with a ton of snails. Personally, I'd argue that crabs are really lousy at algae eating. I don't use hermit crabs at all anymore and only keep emerald crabs for the novelty of it. Whenever there is a topic about adding a fish to do work in the tank, always curious how...

    All for reef alternative

Do you have a solution for the tubes curling? I use the same thing, issue I always have is the airline tubes curl a bit and I always end up dripping solution against the back of the tank and it makes a giant mess of precipitation. Was thinking when I eventually get the pump going again I need...

    Mollies and diseases

Are they actually that good at eating algae? Honestly curious. Lawnmower blenny was the only fish I had that ever really ate algae in a meaningful way. Never had a tank big enough for a tang, they obviously do work.

    All for reef alternative

Also the tube should not be in the water, you want it out drip in.

    All for reef alternative

I believe you should also make sure you dose then at different times. I spaced mine out 30 minutes. I think that was important . I set it up a long time ago and vaguely remember something about precipitation if you side dose both at the time time.

    Shallow sandbed stir for cyano?

Yup that's what I was referencing. I'll also add a vote for chemiclean. I used it years ago on my first tank and it worked really well. The chaeto will probably help!

    Shallow sandbed stir for cyano?

In my experience stirring, blowing, siphoning really does nothing to fix cyano.. at all. The wrapped tank lights out for a few days can definitely kill it off. But for me, it's almost always been caused by a nutrient imbalance. Most recently I was running biopellets on my tank without enough...

Method #3127 for trying to kill a tank.

My go-to heating snafu is the popular, " pull the controllers temperature probe out of the tank by accident."

Just wondering how members have been vaccinated?

Got mine at the mass vaccinations they do at the collesium - was really impressed by how efficient the entire process was, especially at the scale they were operating at.
