I think so as you stir the substrate and not take the water, it will be fine. I always keep a HDX bin full of cycled sand and don't do anything to it... no heat, feed, or circ. And always been fine. Figured no worse than bagged sand

Btw, the rationale on the 1/3 thing is you are increasing chances that the new addition is either a male / neutral / sub...so much easier for main fish to accept. Of course, it you have a known female and a known confirmed male, then they'll pair if not tolerate each other right away.

Get the new addition that is 1/3 the size of the current one. Let them sort it out a bit...and done. I match clowns all the time, and works almost all the time... unless it's a maroon setup.

Officially cursed. Went to feed one of my clown tanks... and found unexplicably that I lost my female picasso from @Cheedo. This is also amongst my favorite pairs...both clowns have lots of blue in them. Raised them since they were a few months old. :(
