Published in Science recently that 11.1 billion stuff made out of plastics cause diseases in corals by scraping against them in the reef. Maybe that's why corals are checking out. :) I always thought they were more resilient than that. I will be careful not to roll my corals around the sand...
I think this video documenting Jason Fox's tanks gave some great insights on basic techniques for reef: lighting, flow, feeding, supplements, qt, and maintenance.
You really don't need that much gadgets to run a great reef.
