My sandbed there is pretty deep maybe 6 inches there is a fine layer of tan detritis on the top of the sand. There is no detritis on the sand in my display tank, that sound right? Do you gravel vacuum it or let it be.

I'd just use some airline hose and gently sift it off the top. a gravel vac may stir too much up.

I would remove as much as possible. Don't stir up with the sandbed though.

Leave it alone. Get a couple brittle stars and drop them in to keep it clean-ish. I doubt it is detritus, but more likely silt. Rocks do degrade over time and you get dust/dirt in the tank. The reason you don't see it in your tank is probably flow. That's just my $.02. If you are not seeing any Nitrates in your tank then obviously there is no excessive detritus decomposing.

Throw in some brittle stars and maybe a few scavengers in the fuge and you should be good. I'd rather have that in place than worry about vacuuming my fuge every once in a while.
