Dosing tanks

I'm wondering if people dose their tanks with other chemicals (like strontium, iodine, etc.). Are weekly water changes, Kalk and 2-part (w/Mg) enough?

speaking of which, anything conclusive on your AA study?
Well, I don't have any charts or fancy big words, but I found out that most people that are dosing and posting their results are pretty much right on. The colors became deeper, if you dose too much though, it can lead to an algae bloom, and browning (it is a nutrient ;))

The Fe had similar results, although I haven't been dosing too much for fear of an algae bloom, again my corals took on darker coloration.

For most people, it's probably not necessary, I was having bleaching issues, and the combo stopped that right away.

It has been a while, but I recall that Iron is the limiting compound in plankton growth in the ocean (I think there were some "experiments" where people dosed iron into the ocean to test if we could use it as a CO2 sink accelerant lol) I am guessing the same principle holds with our tanks? Perhaps that is why I hear people saying not to touch iron unless you really know what you are doing. Are AA that touchy? Any chance we can get (or is there one yet?) a little write up on AA dosing? More of a guide then a big scientific study, cause I know if I ask for that, I'll probably get gunned down on the way to the next BAR meet.

This is one case where the ocean and our tanks part ways. Our tanks rarely need iron as our tanks do not use much at all.

We do not use much iron in our macro production at Reed, nor with our micro really. There are other things that are far more a limiting factor like nitrates :D

Water changes and Kalk to counteract calcium reactor.

What about the Kalk dosing using up MG? I find my MG drops when I dose kalk (kalk drip 24/7) so I tend to dose MG every few weeks even with a bi-weekly water change. How are your MG levels? What do you try to maintain your tank at (CA/ALK/MG/etc)?

I just started dosing 2part like 3 or4 days ago . Im doing it manual right now but want to set it up for an auto dosing eventualy . Right now Im working on figuring out my actual consumption rate . Im gona tag along on this one to see what other people are doing as well

it is sorta hard to tell consumption rate directly because many components are coupled. Just because something goes down by X amount doesn't mean X amount was consumed by coral. What I did was mix up according to the bulkreef recipe and dosed the medium suggestion (after bringing everything up to a "starting" condition). I then tested my levels every few days for a couple weeks. Turns out that that recommended dosing + WC's worked out to a reasonably stable level of all "parts". I got those big 1g dosing bottles from bulk reef. I adjusted my recipe (by dilution for my case) so that 1 full pump=1dose. No more fussing with doses. pump, dose, pump, dose, pump, dose, get some wine and watch a movie.

AA=amino acids

Mag level remains at 1300 for the most part. For some reason I have a hard time getting it to budge past 1400 and that was dosing with Mag flake.
Not necessarily true Tony, in Mikeys case all of the consumption is from the coral, he has a light bioload, and little coraline growth, the corals are consuming alk/ca (like crazy I might add). In order to get a base line, Alk is key, it will tell you what your Ca consumption is, and in his case they are completely relevant to one another, as they are consumed in proportion to one another.

not worth getting into all the technical side, but it is absolutely and always true that Mg/Alk/Ca/Ph are highly coupled in a reef environment:p
//..it is almost worth deriving the master coupled equation! oh it would be so much fun. ok, not really.

But who cares;) Don't let anything go to low and grow the shit out of stuff. The nitty gritty doesn't matter on tanks which we often treat as zero order approximations.

Am I imagining things, or is that Keri(sp?) from MythBusters?

Also, how do I look that good when dosing my tank? Limit excess nutrients, I guess?
