For some reason mine are really tall. I thought that when they don't have enough light they will extend higher. This one is in the highest spot in my tank. It's about 8" directly under 70W MH. Any idea why they extend so high? Too much flow??

I have a few AOG's that look like that but I think it's a light issue. They ones that look like that are being slightly shaded by my Leng Sy cap. The ones that i have on my frag rack about 4-5" from the surface under 150W 14K Phoenix bulbs are short.

But mine is very close to the light and nothing cover it. The Rose Nebula are not like that and they are way on the bottom of the tank. ??? Weird..

Whose tank did they come from Phong? Maybe they came from a tank 10" from 250w's or something :)

They were stretched out a ton in my softie tank when I made the switch to MH bulbs from T5s, I later found my ballasts were not firing to the full potential as a result not much light, I recently fixed that. Yours went to my QT tank a couple weeks before the swap to have a place for frags and to try and rid them of the red flatworms (hope you checked for those!! :D), however they were only about 6-8 inches under a 150w bulbs for 4 hrs a day. So it might be a case of them being used to the high light they were under and just needs to take time to adjust. Look to new ones to form and see how they do, it might just be a matter that they stretched out and can't "unstretch"

Thanks for telling me about the FW now >:( ..

J/K ;D I don't care about pest any more. I didn't dip any coral I got at the swap :o. I guess that's why they are all still alive ;D :D ..

i have mine 9'' directly under a 250w 14k MH and they look tall as well...im not sure who they came from, but i got them at the bar frag sway back in feb. They were one of the corals given out to new members. I tried keeping them lower to contrast with my tubs on the bottom, but they started to fade in color...

My AOGs are very tall, too. I'd say they might be as much as 3" tall. They are about 16" below T5s. The color on them are still very good, though.

hmm.... Check this out.

I have a 250watt radium over my 40g. My AOG are in the middle of the tank about 8" from the surface under my SPS rack filled with SPS. in other words, medium light at best. Tall? More like pancake short. The TALLEST one has a base about 1/2 a cm tall. The shortest look like a skirt growing on the rock. This is contrary to the "high light" = "short" AOG.

Yeah higher light translates to shorter Zoa, when I went from my softy tank to QT (Pre-frag swap) tank they got much more light and shrunk dramatically, in my softie tank some of them are probably 4" tall. These are definitely some of the higher light loving zoas :D

[/quote]Doesn't really seem to be any rhyme or reason to their behavior, then. Roc, how long have you had your AOGs? Is it a new frag or one that has been at the bottom of your tank for along time? I'm just wondering if they are short from being in someone else's high light tank and will eventually grow tall in your lower light environment...

I got them drom Durwin about a month ago, and his colony was at the bottom of his tank as well. But in the past my zoas that are gonna go fro a streach do it fairly soon after being brought into the tank and certinly before they start bracjhing out and forming new heads
