Kessil

I feel like giving up.

I have been in this hobby now for about 3 years. I have had my current 100 gal for about 1.5. I dont know what it is. I can not keep anemonies. I test my water 3-4 times a week and it tests out perfect. I have a corallife retro kit. 2 250watt mh 10k and 2 36in 65 watt actinics. I have a total of 140 gal total volume in the tank. I have a Euro reef skimmer, and a large amounto f live rock and macro alge along with a sand bed down in my refiguim/sump. I run a two little fish phosphate reactor that i put carbon and Phosban in. I also run a kent marine Kalwasser dripper. I change the water and the media in the Kalk once a week. I run only RO/DI water that i get from my RODI unit at my house. I even tested that with the salt mixed before adding to my tank. It tested perfectly clean. I have over 200 lbs of live rock in the tank. I have yet to be able to keep a Anemone.

I acclimate them correctly. I float them in the tank, then tak a 5 gallon bucket and open the bag and then hadd some tank water slowly over a hour to two hour peroid while having a heater ni teh bucket to keep the water warm. I then pick them up and place them in the tank. The bubbles always hide, the carpets always slowly shrink. I dont know what to do. I am now trying it one last time with a anemone that i used to own from my first tank. Its a bleached carpet.

All the Anemones i have tried have come from the wholesalers herein my local area. I work at a local fish store and am able to pick them out. I know what to look for. Closed tight mouth, no bleaching, no tears. I dont know what else to do.

I have even notcied that in my tank my mushrooms have started to shrink and disappear. I have not been able to keep any SPS. Even SPS that has been aqucultured in other aquaria. This tank is my 2nd tank. My first i had no issues at all and i ran only a skimer. Im getting really disheartened.

The only think i can think of at this point is that the tank that i purchased was a used tank. And i am assuming it was used for saltwater because it had a sump with it that had bioballs and what not. Im wondering now if the tank might have had copper used on it in the past. Has anyone else ever had a issue like this? Im not able to keep brain coral as well. The only think that seems to really thrive in my tank are Kenya Tree coral and i have noticed decent growth out of my GSP. I have even had a hard time keeping Zoos.

If anyone has any ideas or anything they might know please help me here.

Here are my paramaters.
Nitrate: 0.0 ppm
Nitrites: 0.0 ppm
Phosphates: 5.0ppm
Ammonia: 0.0 ppm
PH: 8.2
Salinity: 1.026 checked with a Refractometer
Calcium: 440ppm
Temp 75-76 at night. 78-80 day

Im not sure off the top of my head what my kH was. Im not sure why i have high phosphtes. I think its because i have been feeding more. I cut back on the feeding and yesterday changed out the media in my reactor and also have been doing 10 gal waterchanged weekly for the past thre weeks.

Well, high phosphates can hamper your coral growth and also cause algae blooms. IMO, kH is probably the single most important thing that we can measure in our tanks. You really should know what that is.

i havent gotten off work yet. Im going to get a copper test kit. I do know that the last timei tested my kH it was ont he low side but in the right area that i wanted it. Ill be home in a hour and have it posted witht he results.

Ok got home and tested
Nitrates-20ppm
Nitrites-.25ppm
Phosphates-1.0ppm
Annonia-0ppm
Calcium-500ppm
Kh-125.3-143.2
Salinity-1.026
Temp. 80.5f
Ph 8.2

I think I need another water change.

I know that all the rock came from other established reef tanks and I put the sand in new when I set up the tank. The only way copper would be there is if the tank had copper in it previously and it had been absorbed in the acrylic.

YOu are showing nitrites now?? Is you tank cycling again? If it has been up for 1.5 years it shouldn't be showing any form of nitrites.. Have you tested a new batch of ro water and then a batch of your newly mixed salt water for nitrites or phosphates? What city are you in? How old is your ro/di setup? Not sure how you measured KH to get 125.3

I think the nitrites are from the new anemone. As soon as it was introduced to the tank it turned up a lot of the sand bed in the tank. I got the kh from the api dropper test kit. It was between 7 snd 8 drops. Those were the numbers according to the book. My ro/di unit is about 3weeks old. I tested the water after mixing and not adding it to the tank and it tested out perfect.
