Interesting Skimmer Choices these days

I am amazed that there are so many skimmer choices (brand wise) out there today.

Bubble King with it's mini versions which seem to bring it inline with the H&S skimmers and other top guns.

Reeflow Orca - that's one heck of a skimmer.

Bubblemaster - still waiting to see what their recirculating skimmers are like

The old standby's Deltec and H&S skimmers

Somewhat new kid on the block would be the ELOS skimmers as well.

So many choices out there these days. Which one to get?

ASM. :D

I cant see spending so much money on basically the same design.

Have there been any non anecdotal comparisons of the new skimmers?

Isn't there also octopus recirc skimmers? I've heard they work well, but that the pumps produce a significant amount of heat.

I also love Tunze DOC skimmers =)

Yeah, there are a lot of "knock offs" that are REALLY GOOD knock offs, where if anything falls behind it's the pumps that are included. Euro-Reef/ASM debate used to be Euro-reef all the way... mostly because of the sedra pumps, ASM didn't use those I don't think initially, also arguments of "Our acrylic is blah blah.. stronger" umm ok, my ASM G3 hasn't cracked yet.

I believe the Octopus skimmer is a knock off of the high priced deltec skimmers? (someone correct me if I'm wrong)..

A lot of the high end skimmers, really makes me wonder why they cost so damn much.

Because people are willing to pay for it. Kinda show off if you are asking me.

I love my ASM.

I too love my ASM. probably one of the best chunks of money i have spent on my reef.

For my 180 I'm split with getting an ASM G4x or more and getting a bubblemaster 250.

I think as far as needle-wheel type skimmers - not all skimmers and pumps are matched correctly.

My 6-2+ blows rings around my 8-2 ER units - they have the same pump. As mentioned before on another thread the eight inch bodies really need a bigger pump e.g. the new ER eight inch skimmers have either Gen X pumps or what seems to be the more efficient Eheim's needlewheels.

Btw, all opinions are welcome on this thread - we don't have to limit it to the ones I or other's have recently mentioned.

Eric: I have two 9002's running on my 40g. They skim a bit on the wet side, but they're consistent. Plus they are basically completely silent (given you don't get a busted one) unless you put your ear to them. I'm happier skimming too much than none at all.

Be sure to raise the skimmer up about 1/2" or more above the suggested waterline. According to the rep, the pumps running in the US are a bit stronger, thus needing you to bring the skimmer up higher.

I have the 9010 DOC ready for my next tank setup as well ;) If it performs 1/3 as well, I'll be happy and so will my SPS ;)

Hi folk, I need help in deciding what type of skimmer to get. I just got back into reef recently. There are so many choices; I am totally lose. Any suggestion would help.

Here is my setup:

300 gallons main tank with 450lbs rock (350lb of base rock from Marco Rock and 100lb of live Fiji.) 320lb of Seaflor sands
65 gallons sump
35 gallons refugium with two 24watts power compact lights
4 250 watts IceCap Metal Halide (2 14k Hamilton, 2 20k XM)
2 140 watts VHO antinic blue

Fishes: All are rescue from 6th ave :) with the exception of the Tomini (get those from Steve @ Lucky Ocean)
1 Sailfin tang (Zebrasoma veliferum)
2 Tomini Tang (Ctenocheatus tominiensis)
2 Brown Tang (Zebrasoma scopas)
1 longnose hawkfish (Neocirrhitus armatus)

Invert:
75 Turbo Snail [astrae]
18 Cerith Snail
100 Nassarius Snail
4 Emerald Crab
75 Blueleg Hermits
1 Sally

Blastomussa Wellsi
Sun Coral

Okay here is my questions:

I see Recirculating Style protein skimmer and the Dutch Aquarium Systems (DAS) Skimmer that is really interesting. Since I haven't figure out how to print money; I am trying to do some research before making a decision. My first choice was the ASM - Any thot?

Thanks and sorry for the long question.

Dennis,
If you read the posts before yours, there are a lot of people who already chimed in about the ASM.

It seems to be a good choice.

Hi Dennis - all the skimmers that were mentioned are great skimmers.

How much room do you have in the sump first?
What are you planning on keeping in the future choice of coral or fish?

Tangs in general poop a good deal so keeping a system pristine clean can be difficult.

There are different skimmers out there and to some degree it's based on personal preference as to how much your wallet or plastic feels like spending.

Tangs poop, or should poop, far more than most people realize. Given proper grazing opportunities tangs are constantly eating or pooping. Or eating and pooping.

Isn't that the truth - At least my tangs pick accessible corners to do their "business" in.

And isn't it interesting how tangs pick a certain area as a litterbox and keep going back to it. Mine does at least.
