If I have a dirty filter sock, can I simply rinse it out in the sink, put it into the washer, then dryer, and then reuse? Will there be an residual soap on the sock?
Also, of course if a filter sock is horrendously dirty, replace it. But normally, how often, on average, do you all end up actually throwing out a filter sock?

Yes on rinse out in the sink, washer, dryer and reuse... residual soap? Don't use soap... If you want to do more than rinse use Vinegar, Bleach or Oxiclean. Just be sure to rinse thouroughly and allow to dry for a couple of days before reusing.

I have 4 filter socks that I have been circulating on my DT for the past 4-5 months. I switch them out regularly and clean them well. They should last you awhile. I would think that putting them in the dryer might cut there life expectancy down which is why I like to hang dry mine.
