Why is it that 2part solution uses a mix of mag sulfate and mag chloride? What are the relative merits of each if used separately?

Why don't people mix baking soda and soda ash? Would this create a PH neutral ALK additive?

(Look I'm using your FIRST name!!) Most people use Mag chloride because chloride consumption is more quantifiable in an aquarium where as sulfide is more of an "unknown". I blend carbonate and bicarbonate to accommodate individual aquariums.
