Cali Kid Corals

My New Lights

I got my new lights today. Lumenarc Mini's with Radium 20k 250w bulbs. I am running them off of Ice Cap Electric Ballasts. The tank looks so much brighter, and the shimmer off of the water is outstanding. I just want to share my excitement with you. Also also have a question however. I was running 54w PC lights on the tank before for about 12hours a day. I know I have to cut back on the lighting on the tank to let the corals adjust to the brighter light. I was thinking of running the left light from 5:30pm-8:30pm and the right one from 6:30pm-9:30pm for the first week and then add 1/2 hour every week after that. What do you think?

Might consider running them a little less than that Brian - maybe two hours at a time and then slowly upping it by an hour every week

Other than that it looks good

Bryan, it doesn't look like you have a whole lot of corals so I'd be conservative and consider as many of these as you can and this apply's when ever increasing light.

lower everything to the sand bed if it's not too hard
screen your tank with screen door mesh for maybe the first week
start with a few hours each side and add 30 min's every few days maybe

you can't be too safe :) Since you were on PC's I don't think you can give them too little light.

Thanks Levi. Yeah after what you and Jeremy I am going to get some screen from HD tomorrow, and I cut the light time down to just 1 hour for each light. As the saying goes nothing good happens fast.

Make sure the window screen material is the black plastic looking one and not the silver looking one.

The silver looking one has zinc in, and is BAD

Thanks for the warning Eileen, I also need to get some fans for the tank to help cool it. I noticed last night while the lights were on for the 2 hours my tank temp went up 3F.
