plenum system

in the local area do people use the Jaubert system with plenum or do they use the Berlin method or other. what works for sps corals best.

I have a plenum running, had to do lots of reading on the subject and has worked fine. I started with soft and LPS, now I want to move to a mixed reef, checked parameters and everything indicates I can move up to SPS

thanks for the reply, I have had a plenum in my tank(s) for the last 9 or ten years and have always had good luck with all water perameters, nitrate almost always near 0. but the only stony coral that I have is a galaxia which has done quite well for the last 7 years and has nearly tripled in size. I know it would be bigger if I had more powerful lighting. I am only running four 40 watt flouresents on my 55.

Wow, seapony that's a pretty old school setup, not too many people run the Jaubert around here, especially with NO fluorescents. We use mostly Berlins or modified Berlins.

I think it very interesting that you called the Jaubert method old school, when actually the Jaubert method was introduced in the US about 5 years after the Berlin method was introduced by Theil. When you talk about a modified Berlin could you be more specific. Normal Berlin method is just live rock with a bare bottom tank and supper skimming. Also how do you control nitrate build up only water changes or does the liverock take care of the problem?

I view the Jaubert method as a modified Eng style . I think Theil tried to reinvent the wheel to sell product . Also, the Jaubert method had been described to people in the US industry well before it became mainstream.

The reason I say old school in regard the the Jaubert method is that not too many people use it any more, where the Berlin method is still in use on a wide scale basis.


By modified Berlin I speaking of having a SSB while skimming like crazy, or adding a refugium to a BB system, which is what I've incorporated over the years into my setups. In reality I come from the Moe school of reefing and was energized when Sprung and Delbeek published their book.

Moe was also one of the first I read and tried to follow, with his first book and then later with his second. I am always trying too see the current trends especially what works. I am not one that likes to use just what works but what works best. As far as the shallow sand bed how do you avoid Hydrogen Sulfide.

I chose the plenum after I met a person with a beautiful tank and right after started reading on the subject

Make sure the sand bed has enough animals to turn the sand bed over, as well as keeping the sand to a depth where it has a minimal area that could potentially become anaerobic.

I always liked Moe and still do for the simple fact that he approaches things from a "these are the methodologies" versus someone like Tullock or Theil that took more of a "this is how you do it" attitude. There are just too many way to do things right in this hobby if you know how methodologies affect one another.
