Problems with Brute Trash cans anyone???

Anyone ever experience any problems with water contamination w/ the food grade Brute trash cans? I was using one for my topoff reservoir since last September. After a coupe of months I started having some algae problems, then my BTA started going down hill.

I worked on eliminating one thing after another. No change.
Stepped up my water changes and renewing the charcoal. No change.
The only thing left was changing reservoir containers, and after a few more water changes and changing the charcoal twice since Friday, the BTA is recovering.

No corals were affected, just the BTA, which I thought was strange. I'm not positive the problem was the trash can, but getting rid of it is the only thing I've done that made any difference.

Anyone else notice anything like this?

Been using them for years for mixing up saltwater, never noticed any problems. BTA's can do some strange things IME.

I've used the same two Brute containers for both ASW and RODI water storage for about 4 years now without any issues I've noticed. Maybe mine are old enough now that they no longer leech anything, and that if they did leech something into the water, it would be when you first got them?

Tuberider - Were you storing the water in the trashcan or just making batches for a water change?

Amen on the strange, but it's tentacles started dropping off on Friday so I was rather worried. On the plus side, the stress made it split so my percula pair now has a double-wide. ;D

some of mine is over 5 year old,never have a problem with them except some calcium deposit on them if i let my salt mix sit more a then a week.

[/quote]I do on site mixing, and have one at home for my own tank. The one for my tank often has water in it for days.

Brutes carry the NSF label, meaning it is food safe and will not leech anything out.

Like Jeremy I use the Brute trash cans (at home and at work) for pretty much mixing only. The only time I store water in the trash cans is only as the trash can is filling up with ro/di prior to mixing it with salt.

If you leave water within the can itself the inside of the can will take on a film type algae inside of it - more annoying than anything itself.

Well, I guess my next step is to wait till my BTA recovers, and then go back to using the Brute can and see what happens.

I hope my Perculas will forgive me for messing w/ their house.

Yep I use one to store mixed saltwater and one for my topoff and haven't had any problems with them either.

I've had RODI water in mine for nearly 12 years straight with very little "film algae" aka bacterial film Dunno why but I just don't get much at all. Must be the temp and the fact it is 100% dark all the time
