sps and mushrooms

I have had a hard time with to be honest no success in my tank of trying to keep sps frags. I have tried a few montiporas, a birdsnest, and a acropora. I don't get any growth, and I get what I think is rapid skin necrosis, or atleast that is what I was told it is called. I had someone at work tell me that you can't have mushroom corals in the same tank as sps. Is that true? Is it better to not even try sps if I have a mixed tank of lps and soft corals? I also have a large leather toadstool, probally about 10-12 inces across. Could that also be causing problems?

Thanks in advance,
-Andrew

I would say if you were havng an alepathy problem between the SPS and LPS the toadstool is way more likely to be the culprit then then mushrooms.

Mushrooms in my experience are like GSP and xenia. the main problem they cause is their fight for space and light. that is they tend to grow quickly and essentialy smother out things around them.

If you are running a mixed reef. I would reccommend running carbon on a regular basis. This assuming your lighting and water quality is proper for SPS might help your problems.

You might want to list some of your equipment and water parems to get better advice.

I have toadstools in my tank along with a LOT of SPS, no problems. Rather then guess what your problems are, could you list all your tank specs and what you do to take care of it? With out that, it's all guessing, right Bryan?

I do a water change of twenty gallons every month. The tank is 100 gallons with a 40 gallon sump/refigium. I have a two little fish phosphate reactor. A euro-reef rs180 skimmer, stock not modded. And I have a kent marine drip kalkwasser. Umm and for lighting I currently have a 400 watt mh 1400k. Umm and for flow in the tank I have the two return lines and then two korilas powerheads.

My water is:
Salinity, 1.026
Nitrates, 0-5ppm
Nitrites, 0ppm
Phosphates, 0ppm
Ammonia, 0ppm
Calcium, 400-450ppm
Ph, 8.2
Temp, fluctuates from 76-82.

Ya I think that's it. Let me know if you need more info.

On a side note, the sps is never placed near the leather or the mushrooms. Also I have had a really hard time keeping anemones. Oh and the tank is about two years old.

I have both Leathers, mushrooms ( though I am trying to remove them - they spread to quickly), and SPS in my tank. It is possible to have a mixed reef. I would run carbon and I would look at how much your temps fluctuates ina day. 82 is getting high for SPS.

Well the temp always rises with the day. So I should run a chiller then to keep it down or at a set level? Or should I try T-5s instead of mh?

That is a 6 degree swing in one day? I would suggest adding a fan that blows across the water when the lights come on. A chiller is ok too, if you can. I have about 900watts on MH over my 120 and I just have a fan on a timer. I guess it depends on where you live too.

This very debate is going on at RDO with some real information. 82 may be high for your tank, but may not be for others, or the wild :)

Ya I don't even run a heater anymore in the tank. so it will help to have a fan blowing across the top of the water and below the light. But also the temp change over the day is to much? So the water temp change over the day is bad? I'm sorry for what some may see as stupid questions. I don't think I have a way to test Mg. How ever I do know that I have a supplement that I ad when I do a water change that does add Mg and Iodine.

In my humble opinion, I think the swing is a little big. The fan will help, but it will also increase your evaporation. I only have my fan on when the lighst are on, or if its really hot outside, then I run the fan all day. Good Luck.... it may not be the temp at all, so try little things and test.
