Toxicity of PVC cement?

I have a loose PVC slip joint in the setup from my return pump. I need to glue it but it's going to be tough to disassemble things in order to glue it and let it cure out of the tank. Is there any chance I can get away with cementing it inline and leaving the pump off for a couple of hours to let it dry, then turning things back on without shooting a bunch of toxic material into the tank?

Yes, I know this sounds like a terrible idea.

I have done it before in a pinch but it is not the best of ideas. I use this kind http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100343508

I would at a minimum let some water run through it into a catch container just to fluch it out if you can.

I've turned pumps on while the cement is still curing (less than 20min), I don't recommend it, but I've not had any problems either.

Thanks guys, I got gunshy about dosing the tank with cement so found a way to temporarily jam the pipes together in a way that will hold for a while. But it's good to hear that others have done it successfully as it will probably come to that in the end.
