Damn Steve is just an engineer in what he does. There's people who do it right, then there's Steve.
Did he sell off his old tank? Or did was that tank used for this project (this doesn't look as deep as the reef one).

If you are talking about his 800gal tank he just broke the tank and threw it away. He said that it was such a custom designed tank that it would not really fit into any other persons setup.sfsuphysics said:

This tank is viewable on two sides with the overflow/wet box assembly at one end of the tank. There's a Tunze 6305 in each of the end wet boxes with the overflow in the center.......plus three 6105's in the tank. The entire overflow and wet box assembly will be covered and cropped from view by cabinetry when I get that far.
Each Tunze has a custom holder which allows for the pump's easy removal from the wet box. The tank's sump return plus the feed lines also terminate in these boxes.....and their effluent is delivered to the display by the Tunzes. The rockwork plus the LED light's shading of the end wall render the Tunze's out flow completely invisible.....yet unobstructed.
Each wet box has a removable intake screen that is located towards the bottom of each box. The screens are easily accessed from the top of each wet box. I need to clean them about once a month. I have two spares that I use to rotate through to make the screen switch quick.
The sump has very little plumbing....just a 2" 80 schedule overflow drain.....and an 1-1/2 return. Both just drop straight down and return straight up to minimize piping.
The sump is made from 1" thick acrylic which houses all components in the sump ( skimmer, nitrate reactor, GFO reactor) to eliminate sweating issues. There's a sliding filter drawer built into the sump to make pre-filter changing easy.
There is a motorized three way ball valve that facilitates feedings. Three times a day, the ball valve activates and re-directs the sump's return flow right back to the sump instead of going to the display tank. The dosing pump in the refrigerator then delivers the food to the display tank. The food is then circulated in the display by the Tunzes for one hour before the motorized ball activates again.....and returns to normal operation.

What I mean by 'gentle' flow pattern is, judging by the video for example at 2:15, the polyps are waving in gentle motion and floating objects are not moving in horrible speed like I have seen in some SPS tanks. Guess this enable animals to capture food more efficiently.
Regarding gyre, what is the reason to set such long cycle? I mean, the advantage against alternating the flow direction for shorter period of time.
