well being as I moved at the beginning of the month and haven't set up my tank yet. i thought i would share with you who I have infected with the hobby.
This spring i convinced one of my coworkers to get rid of his 75 gal fresh and go reef, and he did. HUGE. i would give him a suggestion about something in this way. this is what will work, but if i had the money i would do this. Now 6 month and 10k later my coworker is the proud owner of an oceanic 150 stannd and canopy, i forget what euroreef but it's overkill, geo cal reactor, 2x tunze 6101 with controller, ACjr, custom sump by Melev, 48in coralife 250w pendent, (the only thing i didn't tell him to get) tunze osomilator top off, and much much more. every time he asks my advice he drops between 300 and 400 on something. the guy has gotten the bug bad. Now I am working with him on learning on his own and not relying on my knowledge (scary i know) and getting him introduced to BAR.
Second is the facility manager here at TLS Fremont. the guy is a diver at heart, I asked him where he had been and he mentioned 10 places in the pacific and a 12 more in the Caribbean off the top of his head. He has kept saltwater for almost 20 years and tried reef about 15 years ago but the knowledge just wasn't there(he has a blue devil damsel and niger trigger that are both 18 years old). I convinced him to turn his little 50gal work tank with some dead "live" rock into a softy tank as he has to travel about a week a month. Once again I did the this is what will work and this is what i would do if money were no option. so about 1k later on a tunze nano skimmer (it's all that would work in the space provided), t5 retrofits tunze nanostreem pumps and rocks and such he has a softy tank willed with tons of "garbage" corals that he absolutly loves. I'm now trying to convince him to spend his excess on a ref at home since he already has a 180 FOWLR, we'll see
My latest target is a freind of the first guy i mentioned, so far he has started a 12g nano that his wife has told him is too small and now he is in the market for something under 50g. i went with them both today to purchase afew fish and corals and they were both asking me what i thought would look good. i must say it's kinda fun spending someone elses money.
I just wanted to share with you that this is a greeat hobby that is enjoyed all the much more when you see someone else enjoying it. i currently have 2 more coworkers who have expressed interest in starting a reef tank. now i just need to work out a way to get a comission on the stuff I'm selling ;D
So share your stories of who you have brought into the hobby.
