When to replace DI?

I just check my DI and it has brown/gold 50% on the top and 50% black at the bottom of the canister. Is that still okay or is it time to change?

I think you replace it when the output is higher than 0 ppm.

Hardcore reefer doesn't like anything higher than 0 Robert ;D ... I use drinking water. So far no problem. My tank is too small to buy an RO/DI unit.

My RODI has a digital TDS meter attached to it, it measures both input and output of the unit but I think the probe for the output is connected before the DI. So it does not really measures what is coming out of the DI.

Haha...than I am not hardcore enough. I am just cheap....lol.

Perry....sounds odd for a TDS probe placement. Can you you put a John Guess T at the end of the DI and move the probe there instead? I have plenty of those T's if you need one.

My Spectrapure has two of them (before/after membrane) (before and after DI) :)

Just messing with you.. I'm cheaper since I don't even use RO unit ;D ..

That is odd Perry.. Are you sure about that?

Elite,

So you are just using tap water on your tank? I've done a few water changes with just tap water with no ill effects, I just use PRIME and an air stone for 24hrs before it goes into the tank. I was thinking about going 100% over to tap to see what happens. As long as you do consistent water changes I don't see why any negative dissolved solids (copper, silicates, phosphates) would accumulate, shouldn't they just be exported in the change? Seems like soon as you add one cube of mysis or flake food these numbers will go past anything you'd find in tap water. Have you ever looked at the ingredents on the back of Spectrum flake food? It list sulfate, copper sulfate, and ferrous sulfate (iron)....aren't these the reasons we don't use tap water in reef tanks?

Cheers,

Josh

You don't want to use tap water in SJ. Your tank will cover with algae in a month. I buy RO water from a water store. Their water is not that bad. It's about 2-5 PPM. SJ tap water can get to 500-600 PPM. Most of the time it's around 400.

I use the MaxCap from Spectra and the meter is before and after the MaxCap but before the DI.

So if it's 2 going to the DI cartridge - something has to be changed. I also check with portable TDS meter of output (after the DI) to make sure it's zero.

I just check the TDS meter. It has two probes, one located at the tap/intake and the other at the DI.
