Keep getting snails in my skimmer inlet

I turn my skimmer off part of the day. I'm not sure if it's that or just snails being dumb, but I keep getting snails in the inlet which screws things up. I notice based on the sound that skimmer makes.

Anyone have a good solution that keeps high water movement but keeps snails out?

I ended up super gluing a plastic drain guard over the intake because of the same issue, worked pretty well.
