I know the rule of thumb for a sump is to get the biggest possible but i was wondering if i would be ok using a 30 gallon sump/refugium from my 55 gallon tank so i don't have to buy/build a new one.

or should i got with the 1/3 rule and just get a 40 gallon sump?

the 120 gallon tank is 48'' and my 55 gallon tank is 48'' so i can't use the 55 gallon tank as a sump:(

opinions are greatly appreciated thank you

I think it probably would work- I have a 30 gallon sump for my 180 and it gets close to overflowing when power is out but it's still ok. If you want a fuge section it might need to be pretty small depending on skimmer footprint & how much space you need for return pump as well as baffles to prevent microbubbles.

Really depends what you want it to do...skimmer? Fuge? Filter sick? Return section/auto top off? Room for reactors or dosing pumps underneath stand next to sump?

like this but more room in the skimmer section for filter socks
