Careers in marine aquatics

Are there any Careers that go hand in hand with the knowledge gained from reef-keeping or at least have a correlation. Ive done my basic google research and I'm aware of Working @ LFS, Marine biology etc however since its not as hyped up of a career so there is less content and advice out there.


What are your thoughts? Do you work in a field close to your hobby? or one that at least draws from your knowledge and experience in reef-keeping / marine animal husbandry.
 
I would say do some informational interviews with some people on here that actually have marine bio degrees -
@Thales , @Matt_Wandell, @BAYMAC I believe have degrees in marine biology.
Also go into the academic depts and talk with them. I know in other areas such as biology -there is way more out there than there was 30 yrs ago and I don’t think google even touches the surface of what is really out there
 
Is the goal to

A. work with things related to a reef aquarium, based on your experience doing so, with minimal incremental prep

Or

B. work on a field related to reef aquariums even if it requires a lot of training

I imagine doing aquarium maintenance is similar to A, and marine biology is similar to B (at the extreme meaning use the interest to get a bachelor's).

Other options like A but with a mix of B could be working at a place like that Monterey Bay aquarium, but I'm guessing most paid jobs there require some higher education. Volunteering as a docent is another interesting option there, but not a career

Id mostly say A but B is intriguing, it would not be my main career as I already have that sorted but as Ive gotten more into the hobby Ive thought about it.
 
Was my dream when little to become a marine Biologist just ending up taking a different path.Always had boats so wether on top or diving deep was close to the passion. However I did work with biologists via the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission doing surveillance on poaching sting operations down in Naples everglades area back in the 90's. Those marine biologists were neck deep in swamp water covered in leaches Ha ! Talk about dedication. Definitely think there was more money back then getting tossed to those career areas heck research can go on for years! One thing in your favor is you live near the ocean which opens up alot more opportunities whether conservation, non profits or 4profit..

Mechanical engineering has a fair amount of crossover to the reef hobby, but you kind of need the mechanical engineering degree to do most jobs there. General contracting is also quite relevant.

Now I work as a full time dad and raising a baby is quite similar to raising a temperamental tank.

Doing any micro biome testing recently?
 
A lot of what I learned transferred into biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Winemaking also has lots of parallels. Aquaculture even more of course.

Getting into good marine bio programs looked to be harder than med school or chemical engineering grad school due to how few spots there were when I was looking.

Sort of. Sort of not. They are the ones paying for sure. I decide if I wanna get up and go or not, and yes they could not have me do the tank anymore, but more often I decide I don’t want to to be honest.

do you have a website or do people just know to hire you from word of mouth and this forum
