Overall Budget Goal:
I want to distill a vibrant and colorful reef tank down into a small but manageable volume of water. The cost of setting up a new reef tank is a big barrier in this hobby, so I'd like to show what's possible with simple equipment and some generosity from the club. While it's difficult to maintain stable water parameters with such little water volume, the cost of equipment/rock/etc. is drastically lower compared to full sized reef tank. I plan to keep easier softies/LPS and do 50% weekly water changes to keep things happy and stable. Target budget is <$250. I hope to have a colorful and full reef by the end of 2025, but nature may have other ideas...

Yesterday, I filled the tank with established sand and live rock from my 65g reef. I also added a few corals. Here are a few pics:

The tank came with a lid which I'm using for evaporation control, since I don't have an ATO. I'm considering adding a cheap gravity fed ATO for when I go on vacation.

I still have some DBTC/purchased corals in my 65g I'm going to add, but I want to wait and see how these corals do before adding anything else. I'll add a CUC once I start to see more algae.

I'm also considering adding a small fish like a yellow clown goby or tail spot blenny. Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not this is a good idea? Total water volume is 3.4g.

Running Total Cost:
$143 (+$30)

Going good so far, I'm having a lot of fun with this tank. I removed some things and added some things. I'll post pics with more details tonight.
Hopefully you don't mind, but I plan to copy your filtration and water pump set up, I have a 6gallon rimless. Not sure when I will offically get it started however. Probably will order filter a water pump similar to what you have shown.

Been wrecking my brain to figure out something that could work well and stay under budget, but I kept drawing blanks.

I have just about ever but the filter, water pump and I may possibly search for a ato.

Of course, copy away! I’m in this more for fun than competition. The glass top that comes with the kit stops 95% of evap. Im planning to add a cheap gravity fed ATO once I get tired of manual top offs every couple of days.

Really don't wanna use my glass top but no choice because I have 5 bored cats.

It's been 3 weeks! The tank is doing great. Here is a list of what has changed:
  • Removed frogspawn, felt like a waste of space given how much room it needs around it (sweeper tentacles)
  • Removed Red Death Paly. Didn't really fit the vibe. I removed this from my budget (-$20), mods please let me know if this is not allowed.
  • Added 5x$10 frags from Neptune. I love digging through @robert4025 's bargain bins.
  • Added 3x hermit crabs ($4.56 from Neptune)
  • Added Biota Weeping Willow Toadstool (DBTC @MichaelB - Thanks!)
  • Added superman discosoma (DBTC @MichaelB - Thanks!)
  • Added Rasta Zoa's (DBTC from @popper - Thanks!)
  • Fragged ricordea florida added from my RSR250
  • Baby jawbreakers added from my RSR250
Running total is: $143 - $20 (removed Paly) + 5x$10 (frags) + $5 (hermit crabs) = $177

Looking great! I think -20 for the palys makes sense, because adding then removing it didn't change the tank. Unlike, for example, adding and then removing a frag after it's grown onto the rockwork, or buying and then removing extra snails to solve an algae problem
