In the nem tank my only one with sand, I've never once cleaned sand. Nither do i clean crushed coral in main tank. I've never even suctioned water from main display during water changes. I cut off the return and empty the sump all the way and refill it.The past few months have been tough on my tank. I’ve removed the old aquascape, added a new one, and switched from bare-bottom to a sandbed. Those changes triggered mini-cycles that stressed the corals, but things have stabilized now and they’re looking much happier.
One of the main reasons I brought the sandbed back was purely for the look. Bare-bottom definitely made maintenance easier, but I really missed that natural sandy feel—and all the little critters that come with it.
BTW: does anyone here just leave their sandbed alone and rely on the clean-up crew to keep it clean?
