At long last I am buying a better skimmer, a Reef Octopus DCS 170, and will put the new sump into service as well. It will use less than half the energy of my CPR CY294 and I expect it to skim a lot more.

I vacuum my sand when doing water changes occasionally. This removes some of the detritus. Something like this video I have never had any problems with the sand turning to concrete (usually due to inorganic calcium precipitation).

I want to get the 4K version just so I can justify buying a 4K television. :-)
