Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

If you are worried about disease and pest transmission, and you should be, set up your own QT system. Learn how to run it. My LFS is like a show and tell for fish disease. All the SW fish are on the same system. The manager said it was all good because they have a UV. It was hard not to laugh...

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

OMG! You have that tank out on the back porch? In North Dakota? :D One 200w Eheim can heat my 120g + 40G sump to about 72-73 degrees. I use two so if one fails it doesn't cook the tank and takes days to come down to a dangerous level. If that behemoth of a heater sticks on it'll cook the tank...

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

Every two weeks! That's way too much work!! It takes me a week to get psyched up to do battle with the BRS reactor! IIRC, BRS says to watch phosphates and when it climbs it's time for a change. Now all I have to do is remember to test for phosphates! :D

    Seriatoporas gone south!

No. I only dose two part. I'm not convinced all the additives are a good thing for anything else than the supplier's bank account. AAs are protein components, food is protein and will be broken down by the creatures. I put food in and let them go to the work! Update: The main coral, a sour...

    Look at what I made!

Since there is no leaves that's one low end grow op! Nice shirt. Interesting team building activity. Like crafts in summer camp! :D

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

I'm on a similar change schedule. I got bad clumping when the supply pump clogged and I didn't notice it for a few days. Flow was way low and GFO was like a big rusty rock! Sorry for the hijack, Felicia!

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

You talking about GFO all by itself? If I don't tumble it, it gets rock hard!

    I could use some help...

Coraline will take up Alk and Ca.

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

Nice tidy sump you've got there! It's funny. Just after I posted about not tumbling carbon, I see a Marine Depot, IIRC, vid saying to tumble. Who can you trust?? :D

    Switching Salts

I use ESV. The levels are just about what I like and maintain so no bump/dip during WC. I think RSCP is high because they don't expect their users to be 'dosers' and WC is the only way to keep Alk up. You could lessen the effect by doing smaller, more frequent, changes. On Reef Central there...

If you mix them don't tumble. GFO is much harder than carbon and will grind it up. The only reason GFO is tumbled is to prevent clumping. It won't clump when carbon is mixed in. This is all in a BRS 'how to' video. Your tank is looking good. Anthias are cool. Is Lily working on a catnip buzz? :D

    Seriatoporas gone south!

Thank, Kris. Just tested. PO4 = 0 (none detected). I really dislike zero as a result. Makes me wonder if the egg is working. CA = 380 So I'm going to up the CA dosing a bit and check back in a few days. I'll let the Alk hover there or down a small amount.

    Seriatoporas gone south!

OK I'll do more testing today! Flow hasn't changed since the tank was setup about 1.5 years ago. Two MP40s running several programs via Apex. I do think the local flow around the three colonies has changes because they have grown. The sour apple went from a 1" stick frag to a football sized...

    Seriatoporas gone south!

I did two tests today! :D Alk = 10 dKh NO3 = 0 (aka none detected) I started a PO4 test but the Hana egg either timed out or the batteries are low. pH via probe is 8.3 temp is 77.5 +- 1.0 Alk has gone up some from my last test (8.2) but I'd expect that since the bird's nests are not sucking...

Advice on Storing Rock for next time

Other than keeping it alive in water you will loose all the coraline. It will come back, so it's not a total loss if you love the rock shapes. To store it dry, I'd do at least a bleach treatment and perhaps a muriatic acid bath. This will take the rock back to a totally dead rock and remove...

    Rygh's 250 gallon - rev.2

Sorry, I don't know how to do those spiffy split quotes. I'm sure you can figure out what parts go together! ;) Too easy to cross contaminate from QT to sump/DT. In pro setups, QT is in different building or location. There's reports on Advanced Aquarist (IIRC) that the micro droplets...

Anyone have XL tank above garage?

You sure about that? You are supposed to go INTO a building during a quake. When we remodeled there was lots of structure to keep the house up and prevent damage. Look at what collapsed houses in the Marina during the Loma Prieta quake. They came off the foundations. Our addition has BIG...

    Rygh's 250 gallon - rev.2

Fish closet? It's best to have the QT away from the DT but you gotta do what you have space for! For the sump you might want to post this to the Acrylics thread on RC. It's where the pros hang! :) http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1056956 Gen is also a great resource. It...

    Seriatoporas gone south!

They died from the base. I'll do the testing tomorrow and report back. If I dose anything with vodka it's going to be me and not the tank! :D

Anyone have XL tank above garage?

Yep. The job of the structural engineer is to make that 'flimsy' garage into something that can hold the tank, addition and all your stuff. It's what they do! After the remodel the garage will be the safest place in your house. There is an unreal amount of structure to meet current quake...
