Nice progress, it's coming together!! I just switched to titanium heaters, I guess since they're more efficient than glass heaters, they can be a lot smaller. I put two 200W on my 65g system, which is way overkill. The downside to this is more on/off cycles with the extra power and efficiency...

The wet dry vac is a cool idea. I cleaned my sump a few weeks ago and used a turkey baster to suck up detritus that had settled at the bottom of each chamber. It was a slow process.

I agree, it’s impossible to create a perfectly balanced solution for every tank. I’m trying this out because it’s simple. If I end up with major imbalances, I’ll try a different approach. Great to hear your experience, and that others have success with it! What dosage do you use?

I sort of figured an all in one solution like this may have issues - imbalances, missing elements, etc. If I can avoid buying and dosing individual elements, this would be ideal.

I did some preventative maintenance today. My 2x100W Eheim heaters were getting pretty old (3-4 years), so I decided to replace them. I went with these Hygger titanium heaters. They are smaller than my Eheim heaters, which saves a little bit of space in my sump. I also picked up Isol8 MT...

Updates: Added a gravity fed ATO (+$8.50, running total = $185.50). Since I don't have any fish at the moment, I think dosing N/P will help the zoas, shrooms, and toadstool grow faster. It's just an experiment. If things go terribly wrong, I will do a big water change to reset the water...

Interesting! I might have to try this. You just blast their opening with the dental pick? I've been using bumblebee snails and coral snow to control vermetids.

What's interesting though is that you have an excess Ca demand, whereas the article primarily describes reasons for excess Alkalnity demand. I guess water changes with higher Alk and lower Ca might skew your demand towards Ca? Are you using a high dKH salt mix?
