    silencing my RS-80

I feel your pain of the skimmer bubbles. I too have a sump with no baffles. Here's what i would suggest: 1. Do a gate mod on your skimmer. This will give you better control of the water level and give you a built in "down tube" for the outlet. Now, if you already have the down tube and your...

    Lighting upgrade question

I'd say it's pretty easy to say T5 is more efficient than MH. I don't have any "data" to support it but in my tank I'd need 2x250W MH to cover the whole thing and get enough lumens. I could get the same amount from 8x54W T5s. I mean, we all know T5s are more direct in their lighting but there...

    Lighting upgrade question

Hey Steve, You can get a T5 retro from ReefGeek with lights, SLRs, encaps and 3 ballasts for $404.10 Here's the link: Reef Geek 6x54W T5 High Output Myself I'd go with the IceCap version, but the non-IC version will do just fine. Now, on my setup, I'm still running mainly T5s (6x24" and...

    Lighting upgrade question

I'll say exactly what everyone else has said, but more directly: Don't even open the box. Just sell the light as soon as it arrives and get T5s. 4x130 might sound good, but there's a lot more to it than numbers. For example, my uncles tractor has 480HP; does that mean it can out race a WRX...

    Tunze wavemaker

We had a presentation on water movement and the guy (sorry forgot his name) basically said that corals will increase growth with increased flow, PERIOD. So, basically you try to add as much flow as possible until it starts to "hurt" the corals. For example my mushrooms would shrivel and die at...

    MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Every year I am reminded about The Peanuts Christmas special. While I am not a church going man, I do believe there is something more in life than what we can measure scientifically. So I say with all sincerity to all my friends some of the best words I have ever heard spoken about Christmas...

    Aqua Remora Nano nog

DOH! :o You are correct. I did not know about the aquaC pseudo-venturi valve. It's actually closer to a true venturi you would find on a becket skimmer. Anyway, I wonder if adding a pre-pump venturi would be bad? If you want to give it a try, you can borrow my MJ1200 with the mesh mod and...

Giving away LT plate - Warning - It's not doing well

    Prefered Frag plugs?

I've done golf tees and for me they have the same problem as ceramic disks. Both of them can spin in the eggcrate. When you have stag corals close together this can be catastrophic.

Looking for pictures of good aquascaping

I like those "rules" and without knowing I'm somewhat following them. When it is cleaned up there will be only one "semi" visible cord, but I doubt anyone will notice it. There are two BIG cave/tunnels that are obvious, but other smaller ones scatter around the structure. No rock is within 6" of...

    Aqua Remora Nano nog

Yes and yes. The mesh mod works by increasing the "chop" of your impeller. So, it definitely will help with your remora. BTW, your Remora does have a semi-venturi setup though not a true one of course. The mod is not as easy to do without the "disks" you get with a sedra or similar pump but...

Looking for pictures of good aquascaping

OK, here's where I ended up, what do you all think? BTW, I still have to clean up the frag shelf and the front sand a little. ;)

    Aqua Remora Nano nog

Just two quick suggestions about HOB skimmers: 1. A mesh-mod on a maxi-jet, while not easy, is GREAT! I did it on my 1200 and it absolutely rocks! 2. Another nice thing to do with HOB skimmers, or any skimmer, is to make an external collection cup. You can drill into the cup, add a small...

    A t5 ballast?

Well, I have some 96W PC ballasts that will fire 2x54w T5s. As for buying your own, just pay the extra and buy IceCap from ReefGeek. Or, you could possibly get one here: http://kmaintl.homestead.com/ There are many ballasts available in the Bay Area, heck HD even sells some. But, you'll be...

    HELP NOW!

No butterflies with anemones or clams. Especially Copper Banded. And, I'd get a better looking wrasse than a six line. Jawfish might be a good choice depending on your sand. They are fun to watch IMO.

    HELP NOW!

Please trust me and talk with Fingerwrinkles. He has some beautiful tank-raised fish and he can sell you a pre-paired "set". You will be much happier with what he sells. I can't stress enough how hard you will kick yourself if you buy a pair of maroons for that tank.

    HELP NOW!

+1 here. My Maroon ended up getting too big and too nasty. Talk with Fingerwinkles and get a true bonded pair of clowns. He breeds them locally and they are great (I have three myself). As for anemone, get an RBTA. There is sure to be one available here sometime soon. I've passed along two...

I hope you remembered to pick up some Chemi-Pure, Carbon and Nitrate removers. Don't forget filter socks either, you'll be kicking up a lot of dust in the move. Oh yeah, LOTS of towels! Plan on doing a load of laundry during the day. :D Hmm...anything else...nope, nothing else comes to...
