Recommendation for a really red coral?

For zoas, I agree with Enderturtle. This isn't my pic, but this is exactly how my red people eaters looked with plenty of blue light in my old tank back in Texas. Like most corals, they look dimmer and more orange/brownish under strong daylight (6500K).

    Long Dual Aquarium Stand

I can get hand held power tools, like a circular saw. I don't think they have larger tools like table saws, etc. I already own an electric drill. My only other experience cutting holes in plywood was cutting windows in chicken coop walls made of oriented strand board. That left crazy rough...

    Long Dual Aquarium Stand

Thanks for the catch aqua-nut! I'm not sure why I put all that weight on screws in my original design. That was a great thread on how to build a simple stand for those of use without a workshop full of tools at our disposal. I took your advice and changed the upper rails to 2 x 6s in my...

    Long Dual Aquarium Stand

So I'm putting together a system with a 75 gallon display tank and a 50 gallon refugium/algae growing tank. I originally built a stand that put these two tanks back to back, but that was before I had a small garage to put these in. Now the gf says that putting a 49" x 35" piece of furniture in...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

Yeah, she and I have been dating for over 5 years and we're finally moving in together :-) Ok, then if I actually attempt this, I will do so on the short side. I considered adding eurobracing to the side I cut, but I figure that the external glass overflow that ill silicone on will act in the...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

I was originally planning to put it on the short side, but my girlfriend is pressuring me to rebuild the stand in order to make the system flatter against the wall for aesthetic and "room flow" reasons, in which case I would put it in the middle of the long side. Do you think that makes a...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

It is a framed tank like pic 2. I wasn't planning on entirely removing any section of the frame though; just cutting a section of the frame shorter so the overflow could be closer to the top. My backup plan was to drill holes with a hole saw and put an internal weir and external box. So you...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

Based on what I read on other forums where people documented how they did it, I was planning on using this bit. I will use a dremel tool with one of those guards on it to keep it perpendicular to the glass and I will use a piece of wood to make sure the cuts are straight. I was planning on...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

Originally I had an HOB weir on my last tank. I hated it. It required a little pump to make sure it didn't clog with air bubbles and it took up too much room in my tank. Granted, my current tank is a lot bigger, so I am not as pressed for space, but I really want as little in the display as...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

Lol, I haven't actually done anything yet Erin! Except spend tons of money ordering supplies...:( I'm still planning and moving into my new place. Have you ever cut into glass like this? This is one time that acrylic would be easier to work with...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

I just found this computer drawing of what I want to do, just to make it clear. Note that my tank has black plastic trim, not glass eurobracing like the tank in this picture. But I could still leave part of the plastic trim intact so it would have some tensile strength to prevent the aquarium...

Help cutting an overflow into glass tank

I'd like to cut an overflow into the side of a 75 gallon glass tank, like theses pictures I took from the net: Then I would install an external overflow box. I have drilled holes for bulkheads in glass tanks before, so that is no problem, but this seems much more delicate. It seems people...

Putting together an led light for my algae tank; input wanted!

@Lokii_37: Great idea, but I don't think those are big enough. They would need to be 2" in diameter to work, and I don't know of any fluorescent lights that are big enough that they would need such a large cover. @sfsuphysics: Fair point. I went ahead and ordered the heatsink with no extra...

Putting together an led light for my algae tank; input wanted!

So I am putting together an led light for my algae tank (a 50 gallon). I have 4 6500K led boards (25 watts each) that will fit beautifully on a 2" by 48" heatsink from heatsinkusa.com. I want to get the heatsink drilled and tapped so I can easily mount the led boards. I am going to ask...

    Vote on Membership Nomenclature

The problem with guest is that it makes me think of someone who hasn't registered yet. Like when you go on a forum and see who is on and it says "member A, member B, & 3 guests". The guests aren't registered on the forum, hence they don't have a name. Thus I think it is best to just put...

    coral growth rates

Corals growth rates vary tremendously between tanks. My old tank had an Acropora validia colony in it that nearly doubled in size in 6 months, while at the same time my acans grew only one mouth and most of my zoas just disintegrated. As CookieJar said, encrusting sps grew extremely quickly...

I already PM'd Kensington Reefer about them :D So excited!

New to BAR, want some input from more experienced Bay Area reefers

Wow, thanks everyone! I just saw the 90 gallon sale thread Coral Reefer, I'd like to be next in line for it. Although I was hoping to install a beananimal style overflow... Do you think that would be possible in that tank (is the glass tempered)? I'll PM you Kensington Reefer, I'd love to see...

New to BAR, want some input from more experienced Bay Area reefers

I live in North Oakland, just south of the border with Berkeley, just west of Rockridge. It will definitely be an issue of keeping it heated, rather than cooled. Thanks for all of the input everyone. I will definitely seal the cracks around the garage door. I really like the idea of using...
