    9 footer disaster

Nitrate isn't going to kill SW fish - I think you've got something else going on. Nutrients killing fish keeps coming up lately. LC50 for Marine fish is like 2200ppm Nitrate, per RHF and some scientific studies he referenced.

    SPS Encrustation thoughts

I do both depending on the spot, you think horizontal leads to more encrustation?

    SPS Encrustation thoughts

Species is definitely a factor - I have the same experience with dragons and smoothskin types, they just don't encrust much. I also agree that the condition and nature of the frag is a factor - it seems that mini-colonies I get are sometimes reluctant to encrust. My SCOP has never encrusted...

    SPS Encrustation thoughts

I have been fairly successful with SPS. There have been ups and downs but I'm pretty happy with how my tank has progressed. One thing I have noticed with my acros compared to many other successful keepers is that mine tend to grow very branchy - but encrust very little. Some never encrust at...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

This calculator is linked at the beginning of the guide I wrote, by the way. You could actually read that and follow the link there rather than giving R2R more traffic…just saying.

How to Protect Floor from Water Spills?

Same I bought 3, the dimensions are ideal as well.

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

It was probably coming out of your rocks. Phosphate levels in the rocks equalize with the water, and you'll see them release sequestered phosphate for a while after bringing down po4 levels in the water. Or at least, this seems to be the prevailing theory that most of us have experienced to be...

    20g Nano Mixed Reef

Wow! Flow really is so critical. These things can go without light for 2-3 days no problem but a single night without flow... I have a lot of the same corals too, I'm sure we can get you restocked when you take a tally of all the losses! I am morbidly curious about what survives and what doesn't?

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Why would you expect lanthanum to stop the source of the phosphates? It will remove the phosphates, but it doesn't stop you from adding food or your fish from pooping. You need to balance both the import and export side of the equation. Adding some drops of lanthanum once and then expecting...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Lanthanum 100% works to lower phosphates. I was just about to post my guide but looks like @BAYMAC and @Darkxerox beat me to it. I am a big fan of lanthanum, but given that we have certainly identified the problem here - just stop feeding so much, do a bunch of water changes, and see how...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

I'm using a Hydros controller. If you're forced into 1 minute increments you're kind of missing one of the primary advantages of the plank. I can practically guarantee that 1 full minute worth of pellets is too much unless you've got a shitload of fish and a big tank. I happen to have a...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Honestly if any of your pellets are even reaching the sandbed, you're probably feeding too much (and/or don't have enough flow). Feed smaller amounts more frequently. This is the beauty of the plank.

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Pellets come out significantly faster than freeze dried, yes. It’s why many of us (myself included) have two planks - one with each type of food. I run the mysis plank for many minutes at a time, and the pellet plank only for seconds.

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Running 6 minutes of pellets on a plank feeder into your tank with pretty minimal coral load every day is the issue here, case closed! Get that under control (don’t starve your fish though!) and do a few water changes and you’ll be gucci.

    White marking on anthia

Sorry to make light of your situation - I have not had much luck with Anthias myself, and stopped trying. They always seem to have some issue, and just aren't very robust fish. And there's always an asshole among them.
